Dr. Hinojosa Visits Bryan Adams Feeder Pattern

Dr. Michael Hinojosa visited campuses in the Bryan Adams Feeder Pattern last Wednesday. He started his morning at Kiest Elementary, then proceeded to Gaston Middle School, and Bryan Adams High School. He had a good visit at each campus with compliments for all. Thank you everything you do every day for our students!

Soccer Championship Tournament

Congratulations to the Girls' Soccer Team at Hill Middle School. The girls braved the cold weather playing three games, last Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The girls won the first two games moving them forward towards the championship. It was a tough loss in the third and final game.

Thank you to all the fans who sat through the cold and freezing wind to cheer for the girls.

Larry Smith Soccer Team

The soccer team at Larry Smith Elementary collected coats and food for families in need. This donation was supported by the PTA. Thank you to PTA President, Tina Mercado and Soccer Coach, Daniel Saldana.

Grading Tips

One teacher’s approach to grading math tests – This video from The Teaching Channel shows California middle-school teacher Leah Alcala demonstrating her new method of grading tests. She highlights each student’s errors, doesn’t give a grade, and has students look over their tests and talk through each mistake with classmates and with her. Only later can students check their grade online. They can re-take the test, using a different version. Alcala says this approach gets students focused on the mathematics rather than grades. One goal, she says, is to “normalize the process of making mistakes.”

Operation Care at Bryan Adams

52 AViD student met during Christmas Break and volunteered with Operation Care with the homeless on their own time on a Saturday.

Increase Dialogue

So ... in the spirit of Jim Knight's words, below is a viable resolution for the second semester. Reflect on where you are, and consider trying this.

Increase student dialogue in the classroom - Trade in one worksheet for a conversation around learning. Too often teachers feel learning is not taking place if they are not controlling the conversation. Throw out a question based on the subject, and walk around as students discuss it. Let students talk with a partner and then help guide the learning based on the conversations you hear. It allows you to go deep with some students and repeat information to others. Just remember that this will take modeling and consistency, especially if students aren't used to doing it.

This also applies to Professional Development!

Open Carry

Starting Jan. 1, 2016, Texans will be able to legally carry their handguns in a holster openly anywhere they could carry concealed in accordance with House Bill 910. Individuals who obtain a License to Carry (LTC) or have a valid concealed handgun license (CHL) will be able to carry their weapon in plain view, when properly secured in a belt or shoulder holster.

The City of Dallas has trained 311 and 911 call takers on the new laws and regulations to ensure they are able to answer concerned citizen's questions. Dallas Police Department has trained police officers on the new laws so that they are aware of what is legal and what is a violation under the new open carry law. Board Member Appreciation

January is Board Member Appreciation Month. The Bryan Adams Belles are invited to greet the Board of Trustees at January 28th School Board Meeting. The Bryan Adams Feeder Pattern is most fortunate to be represented by Trustee Dan Micciche. He spends a lot of time in the schools supporting our academic and athletic events. He maintains a pulse on the community and actively advocates for the students and families in our schools.

Thank you Trustee Micciche for all you do to support our schools!
