OKAY FOR NOW
GARY D. SCHMIDT
doug through my eyes
How I picture Doug in my mind.......
If he was going on a vacation somewhere, he wouldn't need two weeks in advance to pack (like me) he could probably throw all the stuff he needs in his suitcase an hour before they left. He isn't exactly someone who over-prepares. I think that some things he could not live without on a vacation would probably be his Joe Pepitone jacket because no matter the season, he wears it. His Jane Eyre book, that was not so bad after all. His drawing of the Arctic Tern that he spent lots of time perfecting and his Timex watch that Mr. Big Bucks Ballard gave all of his employees at the paper mill.
The Jane Eyre book
Upon being given the book by the school, Doug thinks the book is going to be dumb, (mostly because even though he is in eighth grade, he can't read) Once his English teacher, Ms. Chowper, finds out about this she teaches Doug to read and he begins to enjoy the book Jane Eyre.
"On Dougs Saturday morning grocery deliveries, he inspires some of the customers to read the book. Even Mr. Loffer, who said he never liked that book, reads it. Mrs. Daughtery sees the book and offers Doug a job as her kids babysitter because they need to be read to before they can go to sleep. And as for Mrs. Windermere, well she was inspired to write a Broadway play."

The Timex Watch from Big bucks ballard paper mill
Doug's father works at the Ballard Paper Mill in Marysville and at the spring picnic, Mr. Ballard gives each of his employees and their families Timex watches. Doug really likes this watch because, "it is the only thing other than his Joe Pepitone jacket that has not belonged to one of his brothers before him."
