HFE Math, Science and Technology

Quarter 1 School Year 2015-2016

Quarterly Updates:

Our school is a learning community built around the methods of math, science, and technology as a means for personal discovery. We embrace the senses of wonder and curiosity that underlie these themes.

This e-newsletter is to share with our students, families, and our Hall Fletcher community a snapshot of the activities and lessons that our students are participating in that are focused on math, science, and technology.

We will be sharing a new e-newsletter each quarter in order to share how our theme is built on wonder and curiosity, implemented with rigor, and experienced with joy.

Dot Day- Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade

K-2 students celebrated Dot Day by listening to an ebook titled The Dot written by Peter H. Reynolds. They then made their own mark by coloring in their own dot. Once finished they watched their own dot come to life using the iPad app Quiver. This app makes what the students colored turn 3D.

Students then shared what they learned and observed on Twitter using the #dotday15, wrote questions to the author and sent them using Twitter, and used Skype to share their dots with students in other states.

Mystery Skype- 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th

Students in 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade have participated in Mystery Skypes. This is when the students skype with a class somewhere in the world but they do not know their location. They then must ask yes or no questions to figure out their location.

Daily 5 Listen to Reading- 1st-5th Grade

Students in 1st-5th Grade are using iPads and Chromebooks to Listen to Reading during their Daily 5 rotations. They often use myON.com and StorylineOnline.com to find books.

Students when through the inquiry process of building background knowledge, immersion, investigation, coalescing the information, and then going public what what they learned. In the end groups created presentations, made Toontastic comic strips, and created their own video using a green screen and the DoInk app.
