Figurative Language

Metaphor, Simile, Personification, Alliteration & Hyperbole.


Definition- A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

Example- "Katniss, the girl on fire." From The Hunger Games, Chapter 5, page 67.


Definition- A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. Also using 'like' or 'as'.

Example- "I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun." -From The Hunger Games, Chapter 9, Page 121.


Definition- the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.

Example- "With both of us hunting daily, there are still nights when games has to be swapped for lard or shoelaces or wool, still nights when we go to bed with our stomachs growling." -From The Hunger Games, Chapter 1, Page 9.
