Arbor Springs February Newsletter
2017-2018: Continuous Learning and Growth for All!
Our Mission: Arbor Springs Committed to Student Success.
From Dr. Durrance and Dr. Tarleton
Congratulations to our Academic Bowl team! They placed first in all three regular-season meets, and represented us at the regional meet in Carrollton.
As you know, the safety of our students and the security of our school is our highest priority. Each year, we develop and revise a comprehensive safety plan, including emergency procedures. This plan is reviewed by teachers, administrators, district level staff, and school resource officers and is updated regularly in coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Every month during the school year, we have a fire drill and/or a severe weather drill. We practice code yellow drills (where all students remain in the classroom with doors locked) several times each year, and we will practice our code red procedures within the next week. During these drills, we implement the steps we will take to react to potentially threatening activity or dangerous situations.
We are very fortunate to have a security system in our building that is known as the SHIELD system. With the touch of a button, we can notify emergency response that we have an emergency in the building and all exterior doors along with the corridor doorways will be closed and locked. This would prevent any intruder from entering the building from outside or from entering a classroom if they were already inside.
We will review safety procedures with students Thursday, Friday, and Monday, and we will practice our code red drill on Monday. Meanwhile, if you have any questions or concerns about security procedures, please do not hesitate to call or email.
As always, thank you for your support and involvement in Arbor Springs!

We celebrate the contributions of social workers during National Social Work Month in March. They confront some of the most challenging issues facing individuals, families, communities and society and forge solutions that help people reach their full potential and make our nation a better place to live. Thank you to Mrs. Shannon Adams for all you do for the families at Arbor Springs Elementary and other Coweta County schools!
Swimming in a School of Character:
This month character word is dependability! Dependability means to be counted on and trusted. As parents, it is our job to prepare our children for the increased responsibilities they will face as they grow into adults. We do this by teaching them to be dependable with small commitments at first. As children master small obligations, they become increasingly prepared to manage greater things.
One of the most important things we can do in this area is set a good example for our children. If they see that we follow through on the commitments that we make, they will recognize the importance of keeping the promises they make.

Nurse's Notes
The school year is passing by quickly. Thank you all so much for being such supportive parents. Thank you for keeping your children home when they needed to be home. Please continue to encourage and enforce hand washing!! That is our best line of defense against illness. It is also not too late to get your flu shot. Flu season is not over, so we need to remain vigilant.
Fifth grade parents: Are you ready for middle school?? J It is just around the corner. During the month of March, if your child needs immunization for middle school, you will be receiving a letter. Middle school is very strict in its requirement that all students be up to date on their immunizations.
Also, our lost and found is overflowing. We always go through the stack and look for names and we return them to their rightful owner. If you are missing an item, please come look through our stack of coats and most important put your child’s name in them so we can return them.
If you ever have questions please don’t hesitate to call.

PTA News
The Arbor Springs Elementary PTA is grateful for all the support we have received this school year. The students this year were able to raise a significant amount for Gator Run and with these funds we have purchased 32 brand new Chromebooks. The Chromebooks will be delivered in the next month or so for teachers to use in the lower grade classrooms. Also, the PTA allocated funds this year for the upper grade students to learn outside the classrooms by going on field trips. The third grade will be going to the Capital in the next couple of months; the fourth grade had an amazing day exploring Fernbank, and the fifth grade spent a day at the Little White House. We display an up to date Profit and Loss statement at the front office if you, as a parent, would like to see how funds are being allocated for the year.
Our second biggest fundraiser is coming up on May 4th, Spring Fling. This fundraiser is a carnival-based end of the year celebration that is held on school grounds from 5-8. The PTA has reserved three great food trucks for this event. Also, we have already received donations from area businesses to be auctioned off at our annual Silent Auction. We hope that you and your family will set aside this date to join us on May 4th.
And don’t forget to keep sending in your Box Tops and Coke product bottle tops!
Thank you,
Your PTA
