Sherman High School Culinary Team Advances to State Chef Competition
With a limited amount of time to prepare a dish that would taste good and meet all judging criteria, team HBR from the Sherman High School Culinary Arts program took first place in the fifth annual Lone Star Chef Competition.
A total of five SHS teams created a meal within the National School Lunch Program guidelines using two out of three mystery ingredients; turmeric, jicama, and oranges. After cooking for 30 minutes, each team presented their final product to a panel of community and district judges. Each dish was sampled and scored based on appearance, taste, the degree of difficulty, the use of secret ingredients, and nutritional restrictions. The HBR team of Haley Klas, Bailey Kuhn, and Robert Callejas prepared BBQ pulled pork sliders and coleslaw to clinch their win. The dish scored well with the judges and put them in the top spot to advance to the state competition.
Team HBR will now compete against other state finalists at Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX next month. Aramark will add the winning recipe from the finals competition to the Aramark K-12 menus, and the first place winning team will receive a $2,500 scholarship, to be split evenly amongst the team.
Aramark sponsors the Lone Star Chef competition which is organized by the Sherman ISD Food Service Department.

Absenteeism: 10 Proven Methods to Help Improve Attendance
Chronic absenteeism can be an issue for students and research confirms students not in class are likely higher to drop out, develop depression or anxiety, and can seldom develop social issues. We know that sometimes our parents prevent our students from getting to school on time, older students may tend to skip class or not get to the classroom after their parent dropped them off at school. As Shaun Killian explains “chronically absent students view their relationships with their teachers (or lack thereof) as the most important factor of all. So what can we do as teachers to help improve student attendance? Keep in mind, there are many factors that we cannot control, but the one listed are strategies that all teachers control:
Be passionate about teaching and learning - express and show to your students you love your content, and you like the science of teaching. Through action, words and conversations in class with your students, does it exude passion about what you do?
Building relationships with students - does every student in your class feel important? “Students don’t always remember what you do, but they do remember how you made them feel” (Killian). Talk to them by themselves, get to know them, find out about who they are.
Encourage students to be a part of an extracurricular program - do you know if every student in your class is involved in something at the school? Students who feel connected to the school, attend! Encourage them to get involved
For additional ideas of how we can control student attendance, please take time to read this article. I challenge you to try all 10 methods.
