Westy Academy Weekly Newsletter

Week of March 7th-11th 2022

A Message From the Principal...

Owls,

We made it through conferences! What a pleasure it was to spend a little chunk of time with our parents checking in about our students.

One takeaway we have from conferences surrounds attendance. Although many students are doing well and thriving, we are having some severe issues with students arriving late to school, and therefore missing large percentages of their school hours every week. In addition, we have also seen an upward trend of absences that are NOT illness related, which is also of administrative concern for our students.

To aid in tackling the aforementioned issues, the district has partnered with a service to help address truancy in schools. Starting this week, WPS will be sending out letters informing you if your student has a high number of absences. It is crucial to your students success that they be in attendance—this includes being on time in the morning and limiting the number of times your student needs to be pulled out of school early!

We love being able to see, interact, teach and mentor your students each and every day! So if you receive a letter and have questions, please don’t hesitate to call the office and ask to speak with the principal or assistant principal.

Sincerely,

Mr. Warwick

The Hollow--Student Activities and Accomplishments

Westy Academy would like to start acknowledging our students for their accomplishments and extracurricular activities they participate in outside of school!

As often as possible, "The Hollow" section of the newsletter will feature students competing in sports, participating in dance classes, craft classes, learning new skills, earning awards, etc!

Wanna be featured??

If you have a photograph you would like to share of your student participating in their activity, please send a copy to Ms. Michelle at Mellerd@westminsterpublicschools.org along with a short description!

Zoo-rific!; Primary Grades Musical

Our littlest owls have been preparing for their Spring Musical, Zoo-rific!

Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Moore's students will be participating!

WEDNESDAY; MARCH 9th at 5:30pm.

Ms. Grenham has provided some resources to help children practice at home. Please find attached a packet that was sent home with students sharing the script and how to get to the songs on Empower.

Please encourage them to practice at home on their chrome books!

Students should arrive around 5:15 so the show can start at 5:30. Students can wear costumes. They can be anything zoo related: animals from the songs, general zoo animals, zookeepers, etc. They can wear their school uniform and hold props if they do not bring their own costume.

Please let me know if you have any technical difficulties or any questions.

I'm so looking forward to the performance!

A Farmer's Life! Kindergarten Musical; Mrs. Barnett and Ms. Hurrle's classes

Our Kindergarteners from Mrs. Barnett and Ms. Hurrle's classes are preparing for their Spring Musical!

On March 16th @ 5:30pm, our little farmers will take the stage and sing their hears out for their families and friends to "A Farmer's LIfe!"

Mrs. Grenham has provided the attachment for parents, as a resource to help students practice their parts.

We are excited to share our talents!

Heart Start Challenge

The Heart Start Challenge was another success this year for Westy Academy thanks in large part to our physical education teacher Mr. Her!

Together, students raised over $1200!!

The top earning students enjoyed dousing Mr. Her and Ms. Grenham with powder paint last Friday as top rewards!

After School Tutoring--Ask About It!

Westy Academy will begin to offer tutoring to students throughout grade levels. If you are interested in tutoring for your student, please reach out to their teacher, or call the office. We would be happy to talk with you about the program!
