FUN WITH CHEMISTRY ON SEPT. 20TH: GRADES 2-5
Teachers, a photo release form has been sent home with each student. Please collect these and return to Kristen McDavid in the office by Friday, September 15th, and indicate which students are missing forms. Students without signed waivers are not allowed to participate! This event is from 8-9:00 am in the cafeteria.
PPfT:
See below for the list of scheduled Pre-Observation Conferences. If you did not sign up, we added you to the schedule. A substitute will come to relieve you so that you can come to your conference. I have sent you, and will send again, questions for you to review prior to the conference.
ECST TRAINING:
In September teachers will meet with an MTSS coach for ECST training. This training will be during your conference period in the computer lab. It will teach teachers how to enter info (parent phone calls, behavior observations, academic concerns) into the ECST system. ECST is the best way to track student goals, student behavior and parent communication. All classroom teachers need to attend. Some grade levels have completed this training. We are working to reschedule 4th and 2nd. See remaining grades, dates, and times below:
September 29th
8:45 - Kinder
7:55 - 5th Grade
PENNY DRIVE:
Thank you for facilitating and donating to our Hurricane Relief Penny Drive! As a campus we collected over $1,100 as of last Monday --and much more has come in. Wow! This drive has ended, and the money will be donated to the American Red Cross - specifically those affected by Hurricane Harvey. THANK YOU for facilitating this effort and for teaching our kids the importance of helping others.

FROM THE PTA
It’s PTA Reflections Time — Within Reach!
Reflections is a National PTA program that encourages students to express themselves by giving positive recognition for their artistic efforts. After reflecting on the 2017-18 theme “Within Reach” students may create and submit original works of art in ANY or ALL six categories:
- dance choreography
- film production
- literature
- musical composition
- photography
- visual arts
How can teachers help?
1. Remember, this is a participation program…
2. Ask your students of ALL abilities to “reflect” on the theme “Within Reach”
3. Encourage students to create “original” works of art. (multiple entries are OK)
4. Make sure they complete and sign the required Student Entry Form with a descriptive, meaningful “Within Reach” Artist Statement, which is heavily weighted in the judging rubric.
5. Have students turn in their entries on or before Tues., 10/24.
6. Do you know professionals that can judge?
7. FYI: If an entry does not comply with the rules, yet deserves to advance, the Reflections Committee will work with the parent/student to make adjustments towards compliance.
The top 20% of entries may advance to the Austin Council PTA level.
More communications to parents and students are forthcoming. Meanwhile, please go to dosspta.org/reflections for more details. You may follow the link to the Texas PTA website to find the program rules and the gallery of previous winners.
Last year, two of our very own Doss Owls, Griffin Meroney (film production) and Riley Kane (music composition), advanced to State. Let’s see if we can get a Doss Owl masterpiece all the way to Nationals!

NO HASSLE FUNDRAISER:
As you know, The No Hassle fundraiser kicks off Monday, and we want your help spreading the word and encouraging participation. The parents in your class listen to you the most! Please post "thank yous" on your website, FB, Instagram and other social media channels with the hashtag #dossnohassle, and encourage your families to give, showing what the PTA and money from No Hassle gives to you. Your help will be critical in raising these funds for our school. If you have any questions, please contact our No Hassle chairs, Tracey Blanton (traceyrainsblanton@gmail.com) or Liz Bronson (lizbronson@gmail.com) and they will help however they can.Thank you for helping us support our school!
YEARBOOKS:
After years of hard work Julie Choyce has opted not to be the Yearbook Chair this school year. Julie has left some very big shoes to fill, but another one of our parents, Marquette Reddam, has volunteered to help us with this project.
Our yearbook is an invaluable way to capture our special Doss experiences this year, so we ask that you help out as follows:
- If you have something great going on in your classroom or for your grade level, let Marquette know so that she can arrange for someone to photograph it. Let’s show off the great things we do for children! She can be reached at Marquette@homesville.com or 512-569-5711.
- Share the photos you take of your students. Uploading is super easy from your phone using the Josten’s Replayit app. You can also access it from your desktop at https://www.replayit.com/r/. Once you’re in the app, just search for Doss Elementary in Austin, TX then register using your Facebook account or email address. Submit your images using the “submit pics” button on the desktop or the “take photo” button on the mobile app.
- Marquette will be distributing class proofs to you before the yearbook goes to print. Please review these proofs carefully to make sure all children are represented, including our students with special needs.
- Get your photo taken on school picture day. You are a valuable part of our students’ time at Doss, and they want to remember you.
Thanks for your help capturing special Doss memories!
