Message From Ms. Regan
Hiya, Bethany families!
They say the only constant in life is change. Certainly, that has held true for this year's "tech" special!
Rather than the "technology" class that we've had in the past, Bethany has moved on, up, and towards STEAM: a combo of courses comprised of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. During the first half of this year, our focus was on the "A" and the "S" of STEAM, giving our Bobcats a chance to paint, create, make mistakes, think creatively, and learn more about the intersection of art and science.
But change, as ever, remains the only constant. So starting on February 1st, we collectively shifted-- both our attention, and our room!-- to technology and engineering. For the latter half of the year, students will be learning about digital citizenship, internet safety, and the engineer design process, in between various opportunities to tinker, try, and struggle productively with coding tools and building challenges.
Thank you for your patience and support through all of these changes, as well as the myriad of other changes that have shaped the 2021-2022 school year. It's been tough at times, but as we all know: Bobcats can do hard things!
Best,
Melissa Regan
Message from School Social Worker
It is no secret the last two years have been difficult for us all. We found out from the district that suicide screenings (our protocol for ensuring safety when a student expresses suicidal thoughts and/or actions) has increased by 60% since 2020.
As a preventative measure, all school social workers have been asked to share some suicide hotline numbers in case you need them during your child/children's break from school.
Stay safe and enjoy your Spring Break! ---

OHSU Test Kits
Students will be coming home tomorrow with their COVID test kits. Please keep them over Spring Break and have your students do the test and return them on Monday, March 28th.
Our OHSU pick-up is around 9:30 on Fridays. If students turn them in after 9:30, we have to throw them away.

Bobcat Jog-A-Thon
School Goal Reward Contest
Our annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser returns this year on May 6th! In addition to being our largest fundraising event of the year, the Jog-A-Thon is also a student favorite, featuring prizes, music, and fun!
To get the kids excited, we are holding a contest for the students to come up with the best idea for a reward if we reach our overall fundraising goal. Ms. Rosenquist and several teachers will do something fun, silly, and entertaining to thank the kids for all their hard work preparing for the Jog-A-Thon!
Your child should be bringing a paper form home with them this week; please return it to the labeled box by the front office by Tuesday, March 29. The student whose entry is chosen will win a Jog-a-Thon prize bag! Winners will be announced at the school kick-off on April 8.
Interested in volunteering for the event? There are lots of opportunities to help out. Please sign up NOW to get approved to volunteer at the school.
All volunteers need to first complete an application and background check to create a profile in the system. Once a profile is created, volunteers will be able to update personal information, view and sign-up for open volunteer needs, and communicate directly with the school Volunteer Coordinator.
IMPORTANT: All volunteers must provide proof of vaccination or complete a medical or religious exemption to volunteer in any K-12 school. As part of the volunteer application process, you'll be asked to upload your vaccination card or an exemption form.

Spring's Steps to Bicycle Safety
With more people itching to get outside to walk and bike, it’s a good time to review the rules to ensure everyone’s safety. Be sure to review the best routes to use and if biking, check the bike’s condition before you head out. This short video, “ABC Quick Check” can help!
Here are a few steps to remember:
● Always wear your helmet
● Ride in the same direction as traffic, not against traffic.
● Be visible. Wear a bright jacket or add
reflective material or blinking lights to increase visibility.
● Stay alert and ride predictably, in a straight line.
● If riding on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk, ride at walking speed and be prepared to walk your bike when it gets busy or at the request of crossing guards. Be always mindful of pedestrians and aware of traffic.
● Don’t assume that drivers see you – always watch for cars making turns or backing out of driveways. Learn bicycle safety skills in a class or ask Safe Routes to School to give a lesson at your school!

Preschool at Bonny Slope
Bonny Slope is an inquiry-based learning school that welcomes the opportunity to have a PreK in our school! We believe that children learn best through playful learning. It is this type of learning that supports our students with problem-solving and life-related skills, known as Habits of Mind. It is the focus on these skills such as persisting, listening, and understanding with empathy, thinking and communicating with clarity, taking responsible risks, creating, imagining, and innovating that is needed to be successful in kindergarten and ultimately throughout their educational experience.
Priority is given to students who qualify for free preschool based on a family's income level at or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines as well as other qualifying questions on our Interest Form.
Any spots that are not filled by September 9th will be open to families who pay tuition based on our waitlist of submitted Interest Forms. Please fill out an Interest Form to start the process for PreK for 2022-2023.
