Kia ora koutou,

A huge thank you to those families who assisted with the numerous senior school sports events last week. We really appreciate your support. Thank you to Erica Cranswick and Emily Cooper for their overall organisation.

This week we have Fiona Wilder from IDEAL Literacy working with our Year 3-6 teachers to provide support and enhance our practice. We look forward to her sessions benefiting our students.

Next Wednesday we have a Whānau Hui from 5:30pm - 6:30pm in the school hall. This is also an opportunity to get some feedback from our community around developing a new localised curriculum. We are interested to know what you want your child at Havelock North Primary to KNOW, UNDERSTAND and DO. There will be a free sausage sizzle on offer.

The order of events will be:

  • Welcome from staff and students
  • Quick discussion around localised curriculum/feedback from whānau
  • Kapa Kaka perform - 3 items
  • Karakia Kai /Sausage sizzle

As the Kapa Haka will be performing in the Hall facing out to the Room 24/25 quad, I encourage you to wear something warm. Please RSVP to Tara Wilkins on twilkins@hnps.school.nz

Teacher Only Day

A reminder that Friday 3rd June is a holiday for Havelock North State schools. Lucknow, HNI, Te Mata, Haumoana and ourselves have a day of professional development together.

Up to, and into the holidays, several Year 4 & 5 students have worked on masks for a school creative mask challenge. The standard has been amazing and everyone is looking forward to seeing the masks displayed and who the winners may be.

On Sunday May 29th at 4.00-6.00pm there is an opening at the Hastings Community Art Centre of the exhibition. After that, the masks will be on display to the public for two weeks.

Enviro Corner - Term 2 Week 3

Through the Garden to Table programme Te Rito were lucky enough to win seven Urban Mac garden beds. The next stage is to plant kūmara crop. The Year 3 children loved digging up kūmara in the garden at Discovery last week and practised their peeling and slicing skills when making kūmara chips - very tasty! Thanks Mr Gray for your amazing mahi!!

Eye Care for Africa

All spectacles will be collected – reading, bifocals, graduated lenses but please no cases (just spectacles). Eye Care for Africa is a New Zealand charity that was founded to provide eye care for people in need in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Eye Care for Africa works with orphanages and other organisations in Africa to help train staff and give children and adults eye care solutions that would not otherwise be possible. Used spectacles can be repurposed for their needs.

Help the Havelock North and Stortford Lodge Rotary Clubs collect 1,000 pairs of used spectacles which will be checked and tidied before being sent to Africa.

Please drop your used spectacles in the box in the school office.

New School App

Please contact Kerin on admin@hnps.school.nz if you are having trouble with the app.

Sport last week - lots of it!

Last week was a very busy sporting week for our HNP students. On Wednesday we had the Year 3/4 Rippa Rugby tournament, on Thursday we had the Year 5/6 Rippa Rugby Tournament and the Year 5/6 Primary Netball Tournament, and on Sunday we had the Orienteering Long Course competition.

As a staff member, it was such a pleasure to take our HNPS students out to these competitions. We saw .....

  • Kids being kind to, and including their team mates
  • Kids being kind to the opposition
  • Kids making sure everyone on their team had a turn starting with the ball
  • Kids looking after their friends who were injured
  • Kids playing rugby and handball with their friends from other schools during the breaks
  • Kids saying 'thank you' to the referees and their parent helpers
  • Kids scoring tries and goals!
  • Kids showing resilience when someone from the other team was being unkind to them
  • Best of all - sooooo many kids SMILING!

Year 3/4 Rippa Rugby Tournament (Wednesday)

The cold didn't deter our 33 Year 3/4 Rippa players - see pics below!

Year 5/6 Rippa Rugby Tournament (Thursday)

The sun came out and took the chill off for our 56 Year 5/6 Rippa Rugby players. See pics below

Year 5/6 Netball Tournament (Thursday)

Six HNPS netball teams took to the courts at the Mitre 10 Sports Park for an action packed five hours. Our HNP Pulse (Year 5) came away with a win in their grade - awesome! See pics below.

Long Course Orienteering Champs (Sunday)

Look at these legends giving Orienteering a good go. See pics below
