Havelock North Primary School - 18th May 2022

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
A huge thank you to those families who assisted with the numerous senior school sports events last week. We really appreciate your support. Thank you to Erica Cranswick and Emily Cooper for their overall organisation.
This week we have Fiona Wilder from IDEAL Literacy working with our Year 3-6 teachers to provide support and enhance our practice. We look forward to her sessions benefiting our students.
Hui
Next Wednesday we have a Whānau Hui from 5:30pm - 6:30pm in the school hall. This is also an opportunity to get some feedback from our community around developing a new localised curriculum. We are interested to know what you want your child at Havelock North Primary to KNOW, UNDERSTAND and DO. There will be a free sausage sizzle on offer.
The order of events will be:
- Welcome from staff and students
- Quick discussion around localised curriculum/feedback from whānau
- Kapa Kaka perform - 3 items
- Karakia Kai /Sausage sizzle
As the Kapa Haka will be performing in the Hall facing out to the Room 24/25 quad, I encourage you to wear something warm. Please RSVP to Tara Wilkins on twilkins@hnps.school.nz
Teacher Only Day
A reminder that Friday 3rd June is a holiday for Havelock North State schools. Lucknow, HNI, Te Mata, Haumoana and ourselves have a day of professional development together.
Pink Shirt Day
This Friday 20th May is Pink Shirt day https://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/
This is a nationally recognised day where we encourage students to wear a pink shirt and bring a gold coin to support this very worthwhile cause.

MASK MAKING CHALLENGE
Up to, and into the holidays, several Year 4 & 5 students have worked on masks for a school creative mask challenge. The standard has been amazing and everyone is looking forward to seeing the masks displayed and who the winners may be.
On Sunday May 29th at 4.00-6.00pm there is an opening at the Hastings Community Art Centre of the exhibition. After that, the masks will be on display to the public for two weeks.
Thanks
Julie Strand

Enviro Corner - Term 2 Week 3
Through the Garden to Table programme Te Rito were lucky enough to win seven Urban Mac garden beds. The next stage is to plant kūmara crop. The Year 3 children loved digging up kūmara in the garden at Discovery last week and practised their peeling and slicing skills when making kūmara chips - very tasty! Thanks Mr Gray for your amazing mahi!!

WANTED
TIDY USED SPECTACLES
All spectacles will be collected – reading, bifocals, graduated lenses but please no cases (just spectacles). Eye Care for Africa is a New Zealand charity that was founded to provide eye care for people in need in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Eye Care for Africa works with orphanages and other organisations in Africa to help train staff and give children and adults eye care solutions that would not otherwise be possible. Used spectacles can be repurposed for their needs.
Help the Havelock North and Stortford Lodge Rotary Clubs collect 1,000 pairs of used spectacles which will be checked and tidied before being sent to Africa.
Please drop your used spectacles in the box in the school office.
