Principal's Message
Hello Chapman families, we are the guest principals for this Chapman Spotlight. Our names are Rina and Emily. We are 5th grade students from Mr.Hendrickson’s class. This is a very important article because there’s only 1 month of school left and a lot of things you should know about right now. First of all, there is a food drive going on. You can drop off canned food in any bag of your choice. But make sure you drop your food off as soon as possible in the main entrance of chapman. The drive ends at the end of the month. The canned food goes to a good cause. It goes to families around the neighborhood that can’t afford food. Speaking of food, want to hear a joke? Why shouldn’t you tell a secret at a farm? Because the potatoes have eyes, the corn has ears and the beans stalk.
The Green Team of Chapman is concerned about the plastic silverware we use for hot lunch. All of the silverware goes to the landfill, which is not very sustainable or eco-friendly. So at Chapman we are doing a silverware drive where you can make a difference in the environment. Just make sure it’s ok with your parents if you bring in silverware. There are tons of boxes around the school where you can put some steel silverware. Just remember, anyone can make a difference.
Who’s excited for the 31st of May? We know we are! That’s the date of the first performance of the Madagascar musical. Put it on your calendars now!

Counselor's Corner
The beginning of the end is upon us. Our fabulous fifth graders are heading off to middle school soon and are counting down their final days at Chapman. We have other students who will be moving over the summer and not returning to Chapman for the next school year.
Transitions are exciting and can also be hard. Talk with your child about their feelings about leaving Chapman. Ask them to tell you their favorite Chapman memory and maybe something about Chapman that they won’t miss that much. As parents you can help them process their feelings of grief and loss about leaving. You can help them explore their feelings about their new school. There might be feelings of anxiety about academic changes and having multiple teachers or anxiety about social situations. There might also be a lot of unbridled excitement about their new adventure.
Many kids appreciate talking about difficult topics in small doses. You can bring these topics up and chat for a few minutes and then return to the subject over time. Don’t feel like you need to have “the talk” about middle school just one time. It’s a conversation that can be ongoing.
To the future,
Ariel Frager

Message from your PTA President
PPS has proposed a $790 million capital construction bond on the May 16 ballot. If approved, the bond would fund renovations and additions at Benson and Madison High Schools and full rebuilds of Lincoln High School and Kellogg Middle School.
Additionally, if the bond passes, at least $150 million would fund district-wide health and safety projects, including: replacing old pipes and fixtures to reduce lead; removing or encapsulating exposed lead paint and asbestos; and upgrading fire alarm and/or sprinkler systems.
The average levy rate for the proposed bond is estimated to be $0.68 per $1,000 of assessed value over 30 years. The levy rate is estimated to be $1.40 per $1,000 for the first four years, declining thereafter.
If the proposed bond doesn’t pass, PPS will continue to respond to health and safety emergencies and take steps to make sure schools remain safe. But, PPS currently does not have funding available to embark on significant long-term mitigation of these hazards.
Ballots go out to registered voters in late April and are due on May 16.
Thank you,
Christy

The PTA is staffing next year's board and is especially in need of a Treasurer-elect (parent of a 3rd grade or younger student) More Information about this and other open positions is available here: https://friendsofchapmanorg.wordpress.com/2017/04/13/pta-board-positions-2017-18/. Healthy Habits
Currently there is a high rate of colds, flu, and other common illnesses being reported in our community. These seasonal viruses can affect both children and adults.
Please take a few moments to go over the following information with your child:
- Do not share food, drinks, or personal items.
- Cover your cough, wash your hands.
- Cough or sneeze into the elbow bend of the arm or into a tissue then wash your hands.
- Wash your hands after recess or gym, before eating or preparing food, after using the restroom, blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
Hand washing is the most effective way to keep germs from entering our bodies. To wash your hands effectively use plenty of soap and water; scrub the palms of hands, fingernails, around wrists, between fingers, and under rings for 30 seconds. Rinse well and dry hands after washing.
You will be asked to take your child home if there is:
- A new or sudden onset of a rash, or unusual marks on the skin, with or without fever.
- Skin lesions or sores that are “weepy” or draining, and cannot be covered with a bandage.
- A fever of 100.5 degrees or higher.
- Vomiting.
- Diarrhea.
Most illnesses are short lived without complications. However more serious conditions may develop. If you have any concerns about your child’s health please contact your health care provider. If you need information about health insurance please contact your school nurse or call 503-257-1732.
Students may return to school after they have been without fever or vomiting or diarrhea for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing, or other medication to relieve symptoms.
Enjoy a casual evening of conversation, hosted beer/wine & pizza in a lovely, private event space overlooking the North Park Blocks. Come see a video presentation prepared by our 5th graders, featuring our EAs - and have a chance at some amazing RAFFLE prizes including: 4 Timbers (sec 216) tickets & employee store passes donated by Adidas, a Sniff Doggie Spa Pkg, 4 Portland Center Stage tickets & drink vouchers, a 90 min.Sacral Space Massage and more! Everything has been generously donated to this event, as we aim for 100% of the proceeds to help fund our effort to SAVE Educational Assistants!
It is crucial that we have Educational Assistants in our classrooms next year - in order to do that we need to raise $66,000. We have 8 EA’s at the main campus for the current school year – NEXT YEAR THERE WILL BE 0 - without additional funds.
Our #1 goal is to raise a portion of the funds needed to secure at least 1 EA for next year. We need to raise $12,000 to do that. We are suggesting a $200/person tax-deductible donation.Space is limited, so please RSVP today! Donations will be collected at the time of the event, or you can donate online at www.friendsofchapman.org/donate.
100% of the proceeds of this event to go toward the Educational Assistants.
