What's coming up next week:
Next week we will be visiting the Book Fair. Your child will bring home a list of books he/she is interested in. If you would like your child to purchase books, please send your child's book money to school in a sealed envelope along with the book titles your child would like to purchase. Our class is scheduled to purchase books on Wednesday.
In reading, students will have the opportunity to master skills for their report card and GKIDS assessment. We will focus again on main idea/details, story elements (character, setting, events, problem, solution) and comparing/contrasting characters and experiences in familiar texts in small groups. Students will also be given the opportunity to practice these skills using their guided reading books independently . These books are written according to your child's instructional reading level. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to apply skills to their individualized reading level.
In writing, students will be responding to literature by stating their opinion about a character and events in stories. Students can practice writing at home by making lists, writing on sticky notes, in diaries/journals, etc. using markers and gel pens! The Dollar Store is an excellent resource for purchasing these types of items so that students can have fun exploring writing concepts.
In math students will begin learning about sorting by attribute (color, shape, size). This is an excellent opportunity for your child to practice these skills around the house by helping to sort laundry by color, organize toys and items in the kitchen such as plasticware and utensils, sort recycling, etc.
Students will be learning about honesty and patriotism this week. Ask your child to tell you about ways they have practiced these character traits in their daily life. Saying the Pledge of Allegiance at school is an example of patriotism.
