Welcome to the summer trimester. Some of you have been in the trenches for over a month already and others just started.
The school will be closed on July 4th and 5th. The library will also be closed on those dates. In addition, we will remain closed through the weekend (July 6th and 7th).
The university recently redesigned its website and we understand it can be a little confusing navigating the new one. While we hope to update and polish the library pages in the next stage of the web page refinement, we're providing a tool to help you navigate the page as it is.
Managing citations and your references is a lot easier when you use citation management software. There are many out there but the library recommends Mendeley for its ease-of-use. Please come to the library at noon on July 10th to learn about the software or contact kjacobson@nwhealth.edu to arrange for another time.
If you weren't aware, we have standing desk tops, EZ-readers and laptops for your studying/test-taking needs.
Our archivist, Monica Howell, always has an interesting display in the library. This months is on how chiropractors used to advertise. Please read more below.
Finally in our faculty corner, if you'd like to learn more about copyright and missed the copyright presentation presented on May 22, the Faculty Corner will summarize what was covered. If you'd like the link, it's in the Faculty Development area on Moodle or you can contact Krista Jacobson directly.
Library Closings
The library will be closed July 4th-July 7th (Thursday-Sunday) for the 4th of July holiday so that our staff may celebrate with their families.
We will reopen at our regular time on July 8th. If you have any questions, email library@nwhealth.edu. Stay tuned for any changes or updates to this schedule.
Finding the Library & Security Errors
In addition, we recognize you may be receiving "this connection is not private" or other security warnings when you try to access our ejournals or databases from off campus. We are working with IT to find a solution as to why you're getting that message even though the sites are safe. When you see this message, be aware that most browsers have options to bypass these warnings if you trust the site you're visiting. Unless there's a random attack, our database and ejournal sites should be safe.
Library Workshops
- Store literature
- Change to numerous different citation styles, including AMA, APA, MLA...etc.
- Insert citations into papers written in Word. Then generate a bibliography.
- Markup PDFs.....etc
Approximately 30 minutes.
If you can't make this time, please contact Krista Jacobson (kjacobson@nwhealth.edu) to set up another time.
Better Studying
Stand Up Desktops
The stand up desktops ordered by Student Senate are now available for checkout in the library. There is one on display on the information desk if you'd like to see what they look like. You may take them anywhere in the building as long as you return them to the library. Technically, the checkout period is for two hours but if you need it longer, it's usually not a problem.
Liability: By checking out and using the desktops, you are responsible for the safety of any items you put on it if the desktop malfunctions. It won't but if it does... catch!
Laptops
You MUST have an ID (Student ID or Driver's License) in order to check them out.

Chiropractic Advertisements
Many newspaper advertisements for chiropractors in the 1910s and 1920s were illustrated. They provided information about chiropractic philosophy, science, and technique. Some were addressed towards the perceived special concerns of female patients. The ads shown in this trimester’s exhibition are examples from a series published in the Eveleth Clarion in 1922.

Copyright
On Wednesday, May 22, I gave a presentation on copyright and licensing for faculty development.
Periodically, I am approached by teaching faculty who would like to use articles or images in their classes and/or in Moodle. One thing I typically discuss with faculty is what they are and aren't allowed to do with articles they find "freely" available online, articles they copy from print journals and articles they find via library databases. Another source of confusion is how to use images found online.
The presentation addresses some of these questions by not only addressing copyright guidelines for educators but also introducing the idea that licensing agreements take precedence over copyright law. Libraries sign license agreements to access the databases and ejournals we subscribe to. Online, even when an item is made available by a publisher to be read for "free," there are still license restrictions attached on how one is allowed to use or distribute the articles.
There will be a copy of the presentation and slides on the Faculty Development page in the old Moodle if you missed it and would like to watch.
