Academics– What We’re Learning About
Reading/Language Arts/Writing: We are working on words with long vowels and vowel teams. We also learned about open syllables, and inflectional endings. We can tell you about main ideas and supporting details in the stories we read. We are also becoming great reading detectives by finding text evidence to support our answers. We have read many non-fiction texts and discovered how they can be written with a different point of view. We have made a lot of growth in our reading skills!
Math: We are becoming great mathematicians and can see patterns in numbers. We are also great skip counters and can tell you how many tens, ones, and hundreds are in a number. We know the difference between standard and expanded form.
Social Studies: We had fun learning about the past leaders of our country. We know lots of facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Who knows maybe one day we’ll be president?
Science: We got to experiment with trash. We learned about our Earth’s natural resources and how we can keep them safe. We are now learning about weather and our seasons. We’re hoping “Punxsutawney Phil the Groundhog” is correct and we have an early Spring!
Fun Activities to Highlight-
We had a blast at our 100’s Day Fashion Show! Our costumes were amazing and we had loads of fun showing them off. Now, we are looking forward to our Field Trip to LegoLand.

Together We Can Do Great Things!
The third graders are continuing to learn about Growth Mindset- this is the idea that students believe they have some control over their successes, can work hard as well as bounce back from challenges, learn to work together, and help pick each other up with positive attitudes.
These last few weeks we have been busy preparing for a musical that we will be presenting on March 4th.
We also help through our annual Jump Rope for Heart campaign. This is a wonderful way for students to raise funds to help kids with special hearts and make all communities healthier. Reading/Math News
How strong is your vocabulary?
Words are the tools students use to access background knowledge, make connections, learn concepts, and express ideas. Research shows there is a strong correlation between a student’s word knowledge and academic success - in all subject areas.
Here are some ways you can help increase your child’s vocabulary at home.
1. Make conversation a priority.
Try naming objects, using number words, and introducing words that explain emotions: the more words they understand, the more they will be able to use.’ Utilize math vocabulary in personal stories to make it relevant and important to your child.
2. Read Together.
Don’t just read your child’s school books with them, but find an area of interest that will also promote reading for enjoyment.
3. Use Words in Sentences.
Use your child’s spelling words and math vocabulary words to create new sentences with your child.
“ vocabulary is the glue that holds stories, ideas, and content together …making comprehension accessible for children.” - Rupley, Logan, & Nichols.
