Unami United
May 1, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
This past week Unami staff got a special treat, a surprise visit from a Unami alum, Jisoo K. Although Jisoo moved out of state shortly after 9th grade, she has kept in touch. We were thrilled to learn that she has been accepted to Harvard University for the coming fall semester! We are all so proud of her many accomplishments and are continually amazed by the positive mindset she brings to everything she does and everyone she meets!
Unami students' calendars are becoming increasingly full as they participate in Unami's many extracurricular activities this spring....sports, concerts, dances, class trips, and more. Please come out this week to see our spring concerts and art show on May 2nd and 4th. The 8th grade students will be going on their class trip on Thursday, May 4th, and our student council is putting on our spring dance on this Friday, May 5th.
We hope you enjoy our newsletter!

INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
This year, along with our newsletter, we will be "tweeting" out photos and 144 character descriptions of all the fabulous happenings in our community. You can easily filter these "tweets" by using the district's new CB Mobile App.
DIGITAL BREAKOUTS = CRITICAL THINKING
Students in Mrs. Haag’s 8th grade science class experienced a digital breakout to review key concepts in the human body unit. This is an immersive gaming experience where students had to use critical thinking skill to solve challenging puzzles to unlock 5 codes. Students went to Mrs. Haag’s breakout website and experienced Quizlet, Edpuzzle, snotes, and google forms to acquire codes hidden within them all while reviewing.
ON THE RUNWAY...
SOLD OUT A CAPPELLA FEST...
CB students, led by district music teachers performed for a sold out audience last Saturday, a sold-out show and an excellent, first-class musical experience for our students and their families. The featured professional performers and clinicians, The House Jacks, were entertaining and inspiring. These are memories that the children in CB will remember for years to come.
GOTTA HAVE ART...
Pen students assisted the MDS class with their Taxzedo portraits today, a fun Technology-Art activity that creates a self-portrait using words that describe them.
Using the Taxzedo app., we first created a word document and then we uploaded a photograph to create the “shape” of our image.
The results are fun and unique, which is just how we like our art to be!

FINDING KIND
Dr. James Stone from the Center for Neuropsychology and Counseling in Doylestown will be talking to the boys about the Teenage Brain. Adolescence is a period of tremendous growth and maturity, both physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially. In fact, at times it can be quite confusing and even scary! Dr. Stone will take the boys on a journey designed to help them understand these changes, know where they are in their development, normalize the experience and if needed, know when it is time to ask for help.
David Fialko, Prevention Specialist from the Council of SEPA will talk about "Natural Highs", introducing boys to the concept that they all have within themselves natural "feel good" chemicals that they can access to help them regulate their emotions and feel optimistic and positive about themselves and their life.
The third session of the day will be an interactive, physically invigorating and fun series of activities under the direction from trainers from the Doylestown YMCA. This session is designed to engage the boys mentally and physically and further develop their collaboration and Team-building skills.

"13 REASONS WHY"
Dear Families,
You may be aware of the popular Netflix original series, 13 Reasons Why, that many of our young people have watched since its release on March 31st. The fictional series revolves around 17-year old Hannah Baker, who takes her own life and leaves behind audio recordings for 13 people who she says in some way were part of why she killed herself.
The content includes mature and sensitive topics such as suicide, bullying, rape, and drunk driving. Because of the complex issues, mental health professionals have encouraged parents and guardians to discuss the series with their children.
We have information about the series, discussion points, warning signs of suicide, and links to mental health resources on our Student Services website.
As always, please know our counselors and school professionals are here for support.

NEW SCHOOL IMMUNIZATION REQUIRMENTS
As of August 2017, a parent must have all immunizations completed within the first 5 days of school.
If the student is in the middle of a series and it is too soon for the next dose, the parents must provide the school nurse with a plan for immunizations (signed by a health care provider) within the first 5 days. If the student has incomplete immunizations and no medical plan, the student will be excluded from school.
You may check your child’s school immunization record by logging onto the parent portal through the district website at www.cbsd.org or by consulting with your child’s physician.
Please click here for additional district information on required immunizations.
