THE WEEK AHEAD | November 2-6, 2020
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Students and Parents,
I hope you are all doing well after the recent storm events.
I would like begin this week's newsletter with a nice story:
They brought balloons to a school. One was given to every student, who had to inflate it, write their name on it and throw it in the hallway. The professors then mixed all the balloons.
The students were given 5 minutes to find their own balloon. Despite a hectic search, no one found their balloon. At that point the professors told the students to take the first balloon that they found and hand it to the person whose name was written on it.
Within 5 minutes everyone had their own balloon. The professors said to the students: ′′These balloons are like happiness. We will never find it if everyone is looking for their own. But if we care about other people's happiness... we'll find ours too.
Credits to @Jennifer Holtz Gaegler for this story.

We know that your schedule is already so busy, and having to sift through all of the school's news can get to be a bit much and time consuming. You can view the most recent issue here!
VIRTUAL HOME VISITS:
Please watch the video and read the info below to learn more about our virtual home visit program! We are excited to be able to spend time with our families again, even if it is virtual!
The purpose of the home visit program is to strengthen relationships between families and teachers. There are limits to what teachers can learn about each student during class time and home visits have been an effective way to bridge the gap between home life and school life. We are happy to continue this program virtual to make it a safe and fun experience for everyone.
PROCESS:
In order to schedule a virtual home visit, please complete the Google Form provided by your child's counselor. If you want to request a visit for multiple FSA students, please complete the form for each student. You will provide some dates and times that work best for your family. Each visit will last 30-60 minutes.
We have now begun offering Virtual Tours of our Elementary School, Middle School and High School programs to families interested in exploring their educational options for the 2021-2022 school year and beyond. Check out the links below for more detailed information and a chance to sign up for a virtual tour!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay happy.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kenan Sener

Science Olympians compete at University of Texas-Austin
The tournament had several glitches as the server running the Scilympiad testing platform crashed and testing had to be suspended in the middle of the tournament. “Science Olympiad developers are still tweaking the platform, so some hiccups are to be expected,” said Mrs. Walsh. “Once we get to Regional and State competitions, it should be running smoothly.”
FSA left the virtual awards ceremony not knowing the team’s placement, but the team was recently notified that it would be awarded the 6th place trophy upon the discovery of a scoring error.
The next tournaments take place on November 14, when the middle school team will compete in the Dodgen Invitational and the high school team will compete in the University of Georgia Invitational. “That’s the beauty of virtual tournaments,” said Assistant Coach Julianne Oliver. “We can have both teams competing in virtual tournaments at the same time without leaving our homes.”
Medals were awarded to the following students who placed in the top 6 in their events.
Reach for the Stars – coached by Mr. Crigler & Mrs. Walsh
1st Place – Nick A. and Gann D.

RED RIBBON WEEK RECAP

Now accepting applications for FSA’s first ever Athletic Fundraising Council!
Want to help fundraise for various charities through FSA athletics? Join Fulton Science Academy’s first ever Athletic Fundraising Council! Learn communication, networking, and event management skills through organizing charity games and contacting potential sponsors. The application is now open and 1-2 representatives from grades 6-12 will be selected. Students do not need to be an athlete at FSA, but they do need to be able to add value to FSA’s athletic program and be passionate about the cause. As student leaders, you will be representing the school, so students who display characteristics such as dedication, drive, and diligence will be selected. Students are eligible to receive volunteer hours and additional leadership opportunities will be available within the council. Meetings will be held bi-weekly at 7:30 AM on Wednesday mornings. Applications will be accepted until midnight on November 4th, 2020, and the first meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 11th.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE REMINDER FOR MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL
Middle and High School Families,
We would like to openly tell you that when more students stay for after school care, it will be harder for us to protect the safety of after school care students during the pandemic. Therefore, If your child is not staying for After-School Clubs or Tutoring, we strongly ask you to pick up your child between 3:16 pm and 3:40 pm.
If your child stays for After-School Clubs or Tutoring, please pick-up your child between 4:00 pm - 4:10 pm.
After school care begins at 4:10 pm and continues until 5:30 pm.
For those students who regularly use after school care, we recommend the monthly payment plan to save money. After school care fee is $20 per day for the monthly payment plan. If you are not interested in a monthly registration, you will indicate this on the form below. You will be charged $30 per day as you use after school care. After 5:30, the fee increases to $40, and $1 is added for each minute after 6:00. If a student is not taken by 7:00 pm, we will inform the local safety authorities for the safety of the student.
If your child will be joining after school care, you will follow the drive to pass the front of the school and park your car at the far end of the building. After parking your car, you will enter through the courtyard entrance. You will not come inside the school building. Please enter the courtyard, and knock on the door "L25" for Middle School and "HS Hangout" for High School students. The images below will help you to see where to park, enter the courtyard, and pick up your child. Please make sure to have your carpool card with you. Please make sure to be wearing a mask, and please maintain social distancing while traveling up the stairs to get your child. Once you have picked up your child, please exit from the same courtyard entrance.
Please note: families are not permitted to gather and remain in the courtyard area after picking up their children.
You will enter the door, continue straight towards the courtyard.
Turn left and the After School Care classrooms will be on your right.
"L25" for Middle School
"HS Hangout" for High School
Please knock on the door and wait for an FSA faculty member to come to check out your child. Please have your carpool card available and ready, and please be wearing a mask during after school care pick-up.
NED's Mindset Mission Comes to FSA
NED’s Mindset Mission is a positive behavior program. A world-class performer takes our students on an interactive educational journey filled with storytelling, illusions, yo-yo tricks and humor. NED’s message and memorable friends inspire students, promote academic achievement, and support our school goals. Throughout the assembly students will be led by clues and memorable characters as NED overcomes Mt. Everest's toughest obstacles, uncovered inner-treasures, and grows his brain. Throughout the performance, students will discover how to activate their growth mindset to overcome social, emotional and academic challenges.
Trick or Treat for Unicef | Sponsored by the FSA Unicef Club
UNICEF is raining money for Trick or Treat for UNICEF!
2020’s Narrative and Rallying Cry
For generations, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has been an inspiring campaign for children all over America, teaching children the value of caring for others. But it’s always been done the same way — by going door-to-door with a little orange box.
This year, a pandemic is threatening to steal the holiday from American children, and along with it, the chance to help vulnerable children around the world. We can’t let that happen.
During the month of October, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is going virtual with a personalized Virtual Collection Box online, toolkits to help ask for donations, and fun activities that unlock even more money. And for the first time, kids get to help decide how the money gets spent.
So don’t put away the costume just yet! Go online at https://www.unicefusa.org/trick-or-treat and help make this Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF the best one ever!
Where Your Donations Go
- $1 can provide safe water to a child for more than two months.
$7 can provide a cold child with a warm fleece blanket.
$15 can buy a box of five mosquito nets to protect kids from deadly malaria.
$58 can buy one box of therapeutic food(150 packets) to save a child from severe acute malnutrition.
$210 can buy a UNICEF School-in-a-Box to help keep 40 children safe and learning in the aftermath of emergencies.
ELEMENTARY FAMILY FUN FALL CHALLENGE
We’re challenging our families to get together and experience some family fall fun! As we leave the month of October and enter the month of November, we would like to provide our families with an opportunity to participate in an elementary-wide mini pumpkin decorating contest. We will pair this with our November virtual resources pick up.
On Friday, November 6th our on campus learners will bring home their family fall challenge & materials.
On Saturday, November 7th our virtual learners will visit campus during their designated time slot to drive through and pick up their November virtual learning resources and family fall challenge materials. We will also have a fall photo backdrop set up for families to take a photo together, if they would like. You will report to the carpool loop during your designated time slot, just like our previous resource pickups. This will be organized by last name again.
The competition will officially start following the last resource pick up slot! Your family has Saturday afternoon, evening and Sunday morning to work together and decorate your mini pumpkin! When you are finished, you will post a photo of your finished pumpkin to the FSA Facebook Page under the competition post. The pumpkin to receive the MOST LIKES on facebook by 4:30pm on Sunday, November 8th will be designated our WINNING pumpkin!
Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded during our Sunday evening viewing of a fun Fall movie. Check out your Family Fall Fun bag for more details, a movie treat to enjoy, and your ticket for admission!
NJHS Can, Coat, & Toiletry Drive | Begins in November
The FSA NJHS is hosting a Can, Coat, & Toiletry drive to help local charities!
Start getting your items together because this drive will take place during the month of November with a possible Saturday drop off for our virtual students!
(More details on this TBA)
The NJHS is asking for canned and packaged foods, toiletries, and coats that will then be donated to local charities. There will be a competition between school levels (Elementary, Middle, & High) where the most donating level will win a prize!
All donations will go to Mercy Care Hospital.
Mercy Care is "a federally qualified health center and Atlanta’s only healthcare for the homeless program (330h), Mercy Care accepts most insurances plans, Medicare and Medicaid and offers a sliding fee scale based on household income for the uninsured.
Mercy Care is a member of Saint Joseph’s Health System and Trinity Health." (https://mercyatlanta.org/about/)
