Big Hollow

Primary and Elementary Schools - October 7, 2016

Big Hollow School District Mission

The District will provide a strong educational foundation that empowers students to excel and instills the desire for life-long learning.

October 15 - Health examination and immunization due date

Illinois School Code and Big Hollow School District Policy require a student's parent/guardian to present proof of their child's health examination and immunizations by October 15 of a year in which such proof is required. Failure to comply with the above requirements by October 15 will result in the student's exclusion from school until the required health forms are presented to the District. All children entering kindergarten and sixth grade must have a physical examination. All students must have a complete immunization history. The Lake County Department provides immunizations for a small fee. Please call 847-377-8000 to schedule or call your child's physician. We do not want your child to miss school; however, we must comply with the legal requirements of the State of Illinois. If you have any questions, please contact the primary school nurse at 847-740-5320 ext 3005 or the elementary school nurse at 847-740-5321 ext. 4005.

Bullying - October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month

We teach our students that bullying is a repeated behavior with an imbalance of power. "Many traditional anti-bullying programs focus on the negative actions that cause anxiety in children. When students are instead taught how to change their thoughts and actions by learning about kindness and compassion, it fosters the positive behavior that's expected and naturally rewarded with friendship. Promoting its psychological opposite is key in reducing bullying to create warm and inclusive school environments." - Lisa Currie

Vision and Hearing Screening

Big Hollow is required to administer hearing and vision screening to following age groups:

· Pre-school children 3 years of age and older

· Kindergarten

· First Grade (HEARING ONLY)

· Second Grade

· Third Grade (HEARING ONLY)

· Eighth Grade (VISION ONLY)

· Special Education Students

· Transfer Students

· Teacher Referrals

A parent or legal guardian of a student may object to hearing and/or vision screening tests for their child on religious grounds. If a religious objection is made, a written and signed statement from the parent or legal guardian detailing such objections must be presented by October 15, 2016.

“Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision examination by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo the vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report indicating that an eye examination has been administered within the previous 12 months”.
