Formative Assessment
What is Formative Assessment? Why is it more important than ever this year?
Yesterday’s phone call with a teacher:
Teacher: “Hey Jen! How are you doing?”
Me: “Hi teacher! I am doing about as well as one can during a global pandemic, how about you?”
Teacher: “I am so stressed out thinking about this, but how in the world am I going to assess students at home from online?”
As a Data & Assessment Consultant for JCISD, I have never received so many direct requests from individual teachers seeking more information around how to use formative assessment in the classroom. Teachers have always placed more weight on direct data from students in the classroom than on interim and state summative assessments because of the nature of the information and how much more it drives their instruction at the classroom level. Now, more than ever, teachers are seeking, in their planning for the return to learning this fall, to implement classroom systems of formative assessment on an individual level. This shows a trend of educators putting students first in assessment decisions.
We know why formative assessment is more important now than ever for teachers to understand when meeting the needs of students but what is it and how do I do it in my classroom, what does it look like in a virtual delivery system?
The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) adopted the following definition of formative assessment: “Formative assessment is a planned, ongoing process used by all students and teachers during learning and teaching to elicit and use evidence of student learning to improve student understanding of intended disciplinary learning outcomes, and support students to become more self-directed learners.”
How does your own definition of formative assessment apply to where you are in your planning right now? What does it mean to you and for your students?
There are 10 dimensions to implementing a formative assessment system for your classroom. Do you know what the 10 are to think about when planning for this falls possible online instructional delivery?
Try this Formative Assessment for Michigan Educators or FAME resource link.
Or, try this website to look at the FARROP tool and the ten dimensions of formative assessment and explore the rubrics for self-evaluation of your own classroom system.
Our team also recently presented at the 2020 Ed Tech Kickoff some introductory or beginning materials to explore asynchronistically to start your formative assessment-planning journey for online delivery.
As always, I genuinely enjoy talking about assessment with you! Please reach out at any time and we can engage in a one-on-one conversation around your classroom assessment needs for fall! Stay well!
