Holmes Middle School
Congratulations to Holmes Middle School for earning the Academic Growth Award for meeting its goal of expected academic growth for the 2021-22 school year! Holmes Middle School Principal Nathan Ziglar received a plaque in recognition of the achievement from RCS Superintendent Shawn Stover at the January 9 RCS Board of Education meeting.
Rockingham County Schools had a great parent night the evening of Tuesday, January 17 at Holmes Middle School! We were so excited to host Jim Jordan from http://reportbullying.com for our parent night!
Mr. Conkle's students worked to tell the difference between fossils, modern remains, and rocks! Fossils ranged in age from a few million to over 400 million years in age!
HMS staff enjoyed fellowship and fun during the Christmas Social before the break!
McMichael High School
Our Eden's Own Journal McMichael High School student highlight is Ava Williamson. Ava will be featured in their upcoming February Edition.
Ava Williamson is a model young student-athlete, whose competitiveness and discipline sets her apart. Ava is involved in many things in the athletic realm, the community and the academic world. Ms. Williamson excels in all that she does.
Athletically, she is a three sport varsity letter winner by playing soccer and running for the indoor track and Cross Country teams. She is a two time regional qualifier and two time all conference runner, and she is only a sophomore. She holds a 4.3 GPA and is enrolled in many Honor and Advanced placement level courses. Ava is a constant participant in everything good at McMichael. Ava is always the first student to help someone out or be there to take initiative when it's needed, with the anticipation of never receiving credit!
Levi Richardson “retired” from school on Friday, January 13 and was promoted to Sgt. by his former SRO from middle school Deputy Robertson. The picture of the deputies with Levi are his dad on the far left, Retired SRO Woodall, SRO Robertson and SRO Harris.
McMichael’s Vex Robotics Team, “The Polar Bears”, competed in their first competition Saturday, January 14 at Jay M Robinson High School in Concord. The team won five out of six of qualifier matches, and were ranked ninth overall out of 36 teams in the competition!
McMichael was able to make it into the first round of the top 16 before being eliminated. The Polar Bears learned a lot from this competition, and can’t wait to improve for the next one!

The Morehead-Cain Foundation has recognized Laurie Calvert of McMichael High School as an Impact Educator for 2023! Senior Anna Casto nominated Ms. Calvert as a "teacher who has had a profound impact on her life." With this award, Calvert qualifies to apply for a grant of up to $2,500 for professional development and personal exploration over the summer. Congratulations Ms. Calvert!
The English Department at McMichael High School celebrated receiving warm hats made especially for them! Ms. Calvert's stepmother made the hats that celebrate McMichael's colors!

Morehead High School
We are proud to congratulate Mikya Breedlove, a senior at Morehead High School for being named North Carolina’s Champion in Microsoft Word 2019 and invited to represent North Carolina to compete in the 2023 Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship! Mikya is enrolled in Ms. Sheila Thompson's Microsoft Word and PowerPoint Honors course. She is the second student in the history of Rockingham County Schools to receive such an honor. Let’s wish Mikya congratulations and lots of luck in winning Nationals!
On Saturday, January 14, the Morehead High School Robotics Team traveled to Concord, North Carolina, to compete in the CCS VEX Robotics Tournament comprised of 36 teams from all over NC. Four MHS teams made it into the elimination matches. Teams 9064W and 9064Z made it to the round of 16 while team 9064X made the quarterfinals. Team 9064Y made it into the finals and finished the day as tournament finalist (2nd.). Team 9064X won the Excellence Award. This qualifies 9064X and 9064Y for the State Championships in March. This is 9064X's second Excellence Award in the two tournaments held up to this point this season. Morehead will be hosting the next tournament on February 4th. in the new MHS Gymnasium. Way to go Panthers!
The Morehead High School Robotics team also competed at the NC VRC Spin Up competition at NC State and team 9064X won the excellence award along with being tournament champions! The Excellence Award is the highest honor you can win, and qualified them for the state championships in March. Currently, they are the only team in the state of North Carolina to qualify!
Happy Homecoming Week! Principal Tuggle decked out for Adam Sandler Day, and Ms. Foddrell compliments him on his Adam Sandler attire! Students anxiously await the homecoming assembly to hear about the week's many activities and meet the homecoming candidates. Parents celebrate homecoming at the assembly. Ms. Val Pyrtle, lead ESL teacher for Rockingham County, attends the homecoming assembly to support students. She takes a minute to congratulate Gage Grogan for his many accomplishments.
Students and Staff celebrated Homecoming week with Mathletic or Athletic Day with the leadership of Coach Spencer! Morehead High School shows that Panther Pride during spirit week!
Cultural Tuesday took place with the second-level students of the Spanish class taught by Mrs. Almeida. In addition to learning the language, the students also learn about the culture of the language. For this occasion, the students deepened general information about the country of origin of their teacher - Ecuador. The students enjoyed the activity as a group. Learning a language opens a door to an unknown world ready to be explored. No country or culture is superior to another. We are just different, and those differences enrich us as human beings!
Senior Wall of Fame! On the senior hallway at MHS, students are displaying their college and career accomplishments. So far we have over 25 college acceptances, and many have secured positions in the military or jobs for after graduation! Students are working hard and succeeding in their postgraduate plans at MHS.
The Morehead High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Nathan Hines, concluded their fall season with their annual winter concert on Thursday, December 15th. It was their 21st major performance of the fall semester. The band is now turning its attention to the spring semester and will present several more performances in the months ahead, most notably their annual end of the year concert this coming April.
Our MHS Health Science Academy students have been doing great things at their Internship sites! We are so thankful for all of our business sponsors!

The AWS Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Scholarship program, in collaboration with Intel and Udacity, aims to help underserved and underrepresented high school and college students learn foundational ML concepts to prepare them for careers in AI and ML.
JoAnna Nichole Hutchens, a student at Reidsville Middle School who goes by Nichole, has been awarded a place in the 2023 National Winter Program as an AI Camp Scholar. She is passionate about science, math, engineering, and technology! Nichole recently competed in the MACC competition and represented Reidsville Middle. She has hopes of becoming a Biomedical Engineer when she graduates from high school.
A big thanks to Mr. Kyle Corum, Youth Minister, with Christ Wesleyan Church in Greensboro for coming to speak with our FCA Club on Friday, January 6! We had 125 Raiders in attendance!
The Reidsville Middle School boy’s basketball basketball team rang the Salvation Army bell at the Reidsville Walmart on Saturday, December 17! Thanks to our young men for giving back to their community, and thanks to Coach Eddie and Coach Price for their leadership!

Reidsville High School
We wanted to congratulate the Reidsville High School Theater program for their performance and participation at the Thespian competition at Trinity High School on Saturday, January 7! Below are a few photographs of the Rams learning some Broadway moves! We even had our very own Mr. Murphy and a wonderful supportive parent participate! We had a blast, and the students truly conducted themselves with class!
Here are just a few of the creative projects that the Reidsville High School Creative Design & Arts Academy students have been working on for the past two weeks! Some were even brave enough to work with zippers and trim. So proud of them all! Their skills on the machine have grown so much! These are keepsakes and concrete evidence of their learning that I know they will appreciate for years to come!

Victoria Ore at Rockingham County Middle School won the Beginning Teacher Mini Grant for $200. This grant is awarded by our local chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. We are very proud of Victoria and the great things she is doing in her classroom!

Rockingham Early College High School
Congratulations to Rockingham Early College High School for earning the Exceeded Academic Growth Award for exceeding its goal of expected academic growth for the 2021-22 school year! RECHS Principal Russell Vernon received a plaque in recognition of the achievement from RCS Superintendent Shawn Stover at the January 9 RCS Board of Education meeting. RECHS was also recognized for achieving a 100 percent graduation rate last year! Way to go!
We are so proud of Dreyann Foster, ninth grader at RECHS. She started collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House and took what she had to them. She is now in the one million tabs and has collected 11 pounds! RECHS is now helping her in this challenge!
At a recent book study meeting, RECHS staff show off plays 4 and 5 from the Growth Mindset Playbook.
Mrs. Williams English 1 class, completed a Shakespeare stations lesson! Students learned about Shakespeare, his works, the language and how to translate it, theater, the world at that time, and new terms!

As part of our Unapologetically Kind campaign this year, Rockingham County Schools was excited to host an Anti-Bullying Program for Parents on Tuesday, January 17th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Holmes Middle School in the Media Center! Jim Jordan from Reportbullying.com was our special speaker, and he did. wonderful job engaging our students and parents! Mr. Jordan also hosted a series of programs for our RCS middle school students during the day on January 17 prior to the Parent Night Anti-Bullying program.
Jim Jordan is an Anti-Bullying expert and professional speaker who offered a wonderful program full of information just for parents to better understand proactive and preventive strategies for their children to avoid bullying, and to prevent their children becoming bullies. We thank those of you who were able to attend!
A Look Ahead
The middle school chorus teachers across RCS wanted to extend a special invitation to everyone to the Middle School All-County Chorus concert on Thursday, February 16. This is a special honor for our students, and the staff and students would love to have you attend if you are able! The All-County Chorus performance will be held in the Western Rockingham Middle School Auditorium on Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m..
Rockingham County Student Health Centers will offer free sports physicals to high school students and rising ninth graders on the following dates until 4:30 p.m..
Morehead High School - Wednesday, February 22
McMichael High School - Wednesday, March 1
Rockingham County High School - Wednesday, March 8
Reidsville High School - Wednesday, March 15
Students must have a signed consent form to use the health centers, and a completed sports physical form to receive a sports physical. If a student is unable to go to their home school on the scheduled date, they may go to any of the other schools as long as they have their paperwork. Consent forms and sports physical forms are available for pickup in the Student Health Center, the Main Office, and Student Services.
- All eighth grade sports physicals will be done after school from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m..
McMichael High School’s football program will be hosting its second annual Father/Daughter Dance on Saturday, February 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. inside the McMichael Cafe. Light refreshments will be served, and professional photos will be provided to all attendees. There will also be selfie stations, and each daughter will receive a flower! Tickets are $20 per couple ($5 for each additional daugher), and will be sold the day of the event at the door.
