Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
October 21st-25th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies Class: This week in Social Studies, students will take their quiz on Wednesday covering the information we have learned so far in our unit on Westward Expansion. This information will include the reasons people moved west, the Homestead Act, technologies of the West, and the Transcontinental Railroad. We will then start looking at different groups of people who moved out West and their interactions with the Native Americans. Our unit test on Westward Expansion will be the 7th or 8th of November. A study guide will go home next week.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA Class: This week in math we will apply our knowledge of multi-digit multiplication to a real-life camping trip situation. Students will have to calculate the hiking distance, cost of supplies, and how much food to purchase. In ELA, we will start our next Junior Great book unit on Self-Respect. Students will read the story, "In the Time of the Drums" with me on Tuesday, discuss it in class on Wednesday and Thursday and take their open-book test on the story on Friday. They will also take their first Word of the Day Quiz this Wednesday. It will cover the first 20 words we have learned in class. Students will not be required to spell the words, but they will need to know each word's definition. In writing we will continue planning our NaNoWriMo stories so that we can start drafting in November.
Thursday is a School-Wide Pink Out!
Students should wear as much pink as they can and please bring a donation of at least $1 to help fight breast cancer!
Friday is Spirit Day!
Students are encouraged to wear their FMES and blue/yellow gear on Friday to show their school spirit. The school store will also be open on Friday.
Wednesday is the End of 1st Quarter
Grades will be finalized in Powerschool by Friday. Report Cards should go home on 10/31.
Other Information:
- A huge THANK YOU to everyone for taking time out of your busy schedules and coming in for conferences. It's been great to sit down and speak with each of you about your child's progress so far this year. First Quarter Conferences are the only district-mandated conferences, but if you ever want to meet about your child throughout the year, please do not hesitate to ask. I believe that when parents and teachers work together, children thrive.
- BizTown permission slips and money was due last week. I will be randomly selecting three chaperones from those who were interested and contacting those people by the end of the day. I wish we could take everyone but BizTown stated only 3 chaperones per class.
- $6 for Scholastic Weekly was also due last week. If you have not had a chance to pay for that, please go online and submit that payment soon. We'd love to order those ASAP and start using them in class.
- Fifth grade does not do a Halloween party or celebration. I have had a few people inquire, though, about sending in a treat for that day. If you would like to send in a small fall-themed treat on the 31st, please let me know.
