5th Grade Scoliosis Screening

November 28, 2022

Dear parent/guardian,

Bear Branch Elementary will be conducting spinal screenings to check for abnormal curves of the spine on 5th grade girls during their PE time next week December 6-9th. Their teacher will notify them the day before to remind them.

Scoliosis, a common spinal abnormality found in adolescents, is a sideways twisting of the spine. It is usually detected in children between 10-14 years of age. Many cases of curvature of the spine are mild and require only ongoing observation by a physician when they are first diagnosed. Others can worsen with time as the child grows and require active treatment such as bracing and surgery. Early treatment can prevent the development of a severe deformity, which can affect a person’s appearance and health.

The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners who have been specially trained (ie the school nurse) will look at your child’s back while she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, girls will be seen separately.

All students must remove their shirt for this exam. Girls may wear a bra, sports bra, halter top, tube top, or a two piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on exam day (PE day).

Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups.

According to law, all girls in grade 5 are required to be screened. If, for religious reasons, you do not wish to have your child screened, you are to submit an affidavit of exemption to school no later than Tuesday, December 6th.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Emily James, BSN, RN

October Volunteer Appreciation & Fall Fest Update

We had an amazing Fall Fest and couldn't have done it without our awesome volunteers. Thank you parents and teachers for signing up and taking an hour (or few) out of your day and night to set up, monitor stations, and take down!! A special thank you goes out to Brad Quindt for organizing the event and all of the committee chairs who worked for months to plan the event - Amanda Krippel and Robyn Miller (sponsorships and silent auction); Anna Lowery, Sarah Spence, Heather Gearhart (food); Emily Hayes (class baskets); Amanda Coleman (ticket distribution); Jennifer Robertson (games and inflatables); Amie Allain (prize booth); Patrick Brom and Claire Brom (setup); Rachel Washburn (cake walk); Colleen and Omar Monreal (decorations); Tiffany Quindt and Kristin Chavira (volunteer organizers); and Lauren Hendrix (publicity). With EVERYONE's help we exceeded our goal and have raised over $35,000 to benefit our staff and students!
