Soil Sampling
By: Taylor Guarracino
What is soil testing
In agriculture a soil test is the analysis of a soil sample to determine nutrient and contaminated content, composition, and other characteristics such as the acidity or pH level.
why should a home owner perform soil testing
When growers guess about the need for lime or fertilizers, too little or too much is likely to be applied. By using a soil test report, the grower does not need to guess.
What information does a soil test give you
A soil test is a process by which elements (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfur, manganese, copper and zinc) are chemically removed from the soil and measured for their "plant available" content within the sample.
how do I correctly perform a soil test in my yard
1. Select the right plants for your garden. A pH test, for example, shows the acidity / alkalinity of your soil. You can then pick plants that will survive and thrive in your soil conditions.
2. Remedy your soil problems. Determine what key elements are missing from your soil.
3. Monitor nutrients. Nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are needed for plant growth, color and blooming.
