Ethics of Mars Colonization

Hannah Iversen

Is it ethical to expose people to unknown levels of human isolation and physical danger (including exposure to radiation) for such a purpose?

I feel that there are definitely a lot of risks to this plan because people could possibly die from high exposure to sun radiation because Mars doesn't have an Ozone layer so it can't protect people from the Sun's radiation. But it in the end it could give us a lot of information about how we can eventually probably populate Mars seeing as Earth is becoming way to overpopulated.

Pros:

  • Could decrease overpopulation on earth
  • Increased knowledge on Mars and it's atmosphere

Cons:

  • Physical damage to the person which could result in death
  • Human isolation could result in a mental breakdown causing the person to become unfit for the task.

Will these Pioneers lack Privacy for the rest of their lives so that we might watch what happens?

People will probably lose a lot of privacy so that people can see how they react and how deal with being in a new environment.

Pros:

  • We would be able to se if we can put more people on Mars

Cons:

  • Dehumanization due to lack of privacy

Is it ethical to conceive or birth a child in space or Mars? And, if so, who protect the rights of a child not born on Earth and who did not consent to the risks? If we say no children in space, does that ean we sterilize aall astronauts who volunteer for the mission?

I do not think that it's ethical to conceive a child in space because being exposed to a alienated atmosphere could cause deformities or could cause health risks we wouldn't be able to predict because Mars colonization has never happened before. I feel that the volunteers should be sterilized so it takes away the risk of the possibility of conceiving a child.

Pros:

  • Information about how children can grow in space

Cons:

  • Possibilities of health problems for the child
  • Possibilities for deformities for the child as well.

Given the potential dangers of setting up a new colony severly lacking in resource, how would sick colonists be cared for

I feel like they would have to plan ahead of time like thinking about every possible outcome or sickness, and be extra cautious and pack a lot of medical supplies and medication. As well as having a doctor of some sort be a volunteer to this plan. But the colonists definitely will have to be conservative and rely on each other.

Pros:

  • We discover how to treat unknown sicknesses or how to treat sicknesses in space

Cons:

  • The person who contracted the sickness could die
  • Could pass it along to everyone on the mission
