A Message from Principal Nixon--Week of November 16, 2020

Dear Northwoods Families,

With Thanksgiving break just a few days away, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your ongoing support. As you know, these last eight months have been filled with unforeseen challenges for our students, staff, and school community. Your acts of kindness, support, and generosity have helped keep us going during these difficult times. I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to serve such a remarkable and resilient community! On behalf of the teachers and staff, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! Stay safe and enjoy spending time with loved ones.

Remember, Picture Day is this Wednesday. If you have not signed your child up for a time slot, please do so before Wednesday. Due to high demand, we have added another Picture Day on December 2nd so that you have additional opportunities to sign up for a time that works for you and your family. Respectfully,

Joe Nixon

Important School Information

Remote Learning Days--Nov. 23rd & 24th: This is a friendly reminder that next Monday and Tuesday (November 23rd and 24th) are state-mandated remote learning days for ALL students. Our teachers have prepared asynchronous activities for students to complete each day. An attendance assignment will also be posted so that we know which students to mark present.

Updated Social Distancing Guidelines:

On Monday, November 16, the first cohort of grades 4 and 5 will return to campus, along with all K-3 and regional program students. On this date, the number of students in K-3 classroom will increase. All schools will continue to social distance whenever possible, but K-3 classrooms are not expected to maintain six feet of space between desks or students if space does not allow. All students should continue to stay apart from other students, employees, and visitors, to maintain as much social distancing as possible.

Stay Home When Sick:
Effective immediately, if a WCPSS student or employee does not pass the health screening or if they stay home or are sent home because they are experiencing a symptom of illness, their household members must also stay home. This means that any WCPSS student or employee living in the same house must quarantine for 14 days. The household members may return sooner than 14 days if the person experiencing a symptom of illness receives confirmation of an alternate diagnosis or a negative PCR/Molecular test.

FYI: Food Distribution During Thanksgiving Week
Curbside pickup locations and Big Bus Food Truck sites will distribute two lunches and two breakfasts on Fri., Nov. 20 to also cover meals for Mon. Nov. 23 as all curbside pick-up locations and Big Bus Food Truck locations will be closed on this date. On Tuesday, Nov. 24, our CNS team will distribute a four-day holiday pack at our curbside pick-up locations and Big Bus Food Truck sites as long as supplies last. Food distribution services will not be occurring Nov. 25-27.

Carpool Tips:

  • Please have your child's car seat positioned on the passenger side of the vehicle so that we can safely screen and unload from the safety of the sidewalk.
  • As the weather becomes colder, please remember that the interior temperature of your vehicle will directly impact your child's body temperature. An increase in body temperature will likely slow the health screening process.
  • To help carpool run more smoothly, please make sure your child has his/her backpack, lunch, and water bottle nearby them so they can quickly exit the vehicle after their screening.

Spring Semester Application for Virtual Academy and Plan B:

The application window for parents to register for Spring Semester VA or Plan B opens on Wednesday, December 2nd and will close on December 9th. It is imperative that families complete the application to guarantee a spot in VA for the spring semester. The district will send out more information, including a link to the application, in the coming weeks.

New AIG Teacher:

I'm happy to announce that Ms. Casey, who served as our AIG teacher during the 2019-2020 school year is stepping back into that position for the remainder of this year. AIG services for currently identified 4th and 5th grade students will resume on Monday, November 30th.

Yearbook Picture Information

Yearbook Pictures--I'm happy to announce that we are working on a 2020-21 yearbook! As part of this process, we have scheduled individual fall pictures for students. In collaboration with Strawbridge Studios, ALL students (VA and Plan B) will have the opportunity to sit for individual pictures on Wednesday, November 18th. We will be using similar protocols (described below) that local middle schools and high schools have successfully used to keep students safe. Please use the link below to sign your child up for a time slot.

Picture Day Procedures-- To ensure the safety of our students and their families, enhanced safety measures will be used on picture day. Strawbridge has outlined those safety measures in a short video, which I have posted below.

On picture day, parents will drop their child off at the front entrance of the school. Once students enter the building, parents will pull around to the bus loop to wait. As students enter the building, they will be escorted to the cafeteria for their picture. Once the picture process is complete, students will exit the cafeteria through the doors near the 2nd grade hallway and will exit the building at the bus loop where parents will pick them up.

Additional Picture Day Information--

  • Students must pass a health screening and wear a face covering before entering the building.
  • Social distancing (6ft) is required while students are on campus.
  • Parents and other visitors will not be permitted in the building.
  • Picture packets should be ordered online using the links in the Sign-Up. We are not collecting money (cash, checks, etc.) at school.

Additional Picture Day Added:

Due to high demand, we have added an additional date for student pictures. Families now have the opportunity to sign up for a time slot on December 2nd (see the link below). Please let us know if you have any questions.
