Grade Level Specific Information
Seniors
Congratulations Class of 2023! You are finally Seniors! It's going to be a big year for you. Time to start figuring out what you really want to do after you graduate. Will you be going to College? Will you go to a Community College then transfer? Will you go directly to a 4 year University from High School? Do you want to go into an Trades Apprenticeship program? Do you want to get a job and save some money then figure it out later? Start figuring it out now. If you plan to go directly to a 4 year University, I hope you took my advice at the end of school in the spring and started working on your college essays / personal statement. I also hope you took a few hours to attend some of the sessions of the Virtual CUHSD College Application Kick Off event offered by Prospect.
Remember the phases of the College Application Process? Phase 1 is Research. I hope you have done some research and made a list of colleges you want to apply to and determined what the application requirements are for those. Ideally, you've at least started Phase 2: Self-Description and have some draft essays that can be refined. We will be having more workshops for the various phases of the process in August, September and October. Most of these will be on Tuesdays during Study Hall in the Library. Check the CCC Events calendar for specific dates and times that these will be held.
Finally, I hope to meet with each of you this year and make sure you have some sort of path for your future. Make an appointment with me to talk about your future plans at calendly.com/rklaus/15min.
I look forward to meeting with you!
Juniors
You may be wondering if you need to take the SAT or ACT for your college applications next year. Many schools have become Test Optional. This means that you can submit a test score if you want to but it is not necessary. If you think you are a good test taker and that it will add to your application, then take one of the tests. The UCs and CSUs are Test Blind now which means that they will not look at test scores for admission purposes even if you send your score. If there are particular colleges that you really want to go to, check out their admissions websites and see what their requirements are. If they require the SAT/ACT then go ahead and sign up for a test and begin preparing. The registration deadlines are typically one month before the test date.
Below are the test dates remaining this year:
SAT test dates: Oct 1, Nov 5, Dec 3
ACT test dates: Sep 10, Oct 22, Dec 10
Sophomores
All of you have a Naviance account but may not know what to do with it. Hopefully we will be teaching you more about it this year. Try to login to your Naviance and check out the college visits we have coming up. Sign up for a visit on Naviance and we will send a pass to your class on the day of the visit reminding you to come to the library for the event. Here are the directions for how to signup for a College Visit on Naviance. Pick schools that you've never heard of so you can learn about them. You might just find a school that is a PERFECT FIT for you. I look forward to seeing you!

Klaus's Kernels
Since the college visits haven't started yet, I don't have and Fun Facts to share with you yet. Instead, I thought I'd share some tidbits of knowledge that will be helpful throughout the year.
Google It, and filter the search hits by READING them: The next tidbit of knowledge I have for students is this. When you don't know how to do something or need some information, you probably aren't the first person with that question. So, type the question into Google and read the results. The first result isn't always the best one. I have every confidence that all students know how to "google" something. I'm not sure, however, how many people actually take time to properly process the results. Look for hits that seem credible (because not everything on the internet is credible) and then read the results that seem reasonable. Most times you'll find the answer.
