Upcoming Events
Picture Retake Day is Tuesday, October 29th.
Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 14th after school and all day on Tuesday, November 19th. I am still working on getting in contact with a few families to schedule a conference. If you do not have one scheduled, please check your email or child's backpack for a note with my open times. Thanks!

Halloween
A note from Mr. Harnack:
Our parade will begin at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 31. Parents can arrive at 1:00 to assist students with their costumes and line up on the blacktop for the parade. In case of inclement weather, we will line up in the gym. Just a reminder, if your child chooses to wear a costume please be aware of the following:
Ø NO blood simulation, scary masks, toy weapons.
Ø They must bring their costume to school; they cannot wear it to school.
Ø Students cannot bring make-up/face paint to school and cannot wear it to school (colored hair done at home is acceptable).
For some of our older kids this necessitates major alterations to the costume they will wear when they go trick or treating later. We want kids to see that at school we have to be a bit more sensitive to the needs of our younger students.
There will be an alternate, non-Halloween activity provided for students not participating in the parade. Please let your child’s teacher know in advance if they will not participate.
**Because we are at lunch recess until 12:55, we will have our fall snack sometime earlier in the morning. I will send an email reminder to those of you who graciously signed up to bring a snack or supplies. Thank you!**
Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
Whole Group Instruction- During our whole group instruction, we learn new vocabulary words each week, read a story in our anthology, and practice comprehension and grammar skills. This week we read Animals Building Homes and learned about the text and graphic features that helped us learn more about the informational text. We will learn about plural nouns in the grammar portion.
Small Group Instruction- We are using a Walk to Read model with our Title 1 reading teachers this year. Your child may be working in Mrs. Sample or Mrs. Howsare's classroom during this time. Instruction looks a little bit different in each classroom, but all three rooms continue to help students build fluency and comprehension skills.
Math
The class is doing an awesome job returning their math homework! Homework is due two schools days after it is sent home.
You have probably noticed that I send home math book pages as we finish each topic. There will be pages in the packet students have not finished. These are not homework and do not need to be returned to school, but can definitely be done at home for extra practice!
I will hold onto our math tests until conference time and will give them to you at that time.
Social Studies/Science
In science, we finished up our first investigation on air by launching balloon rockets. We are currently in our second investigation on observing weather. We started by putting our weather calendars into our notebooks. We are being meteorologists and recording the weather conditions each day. This week we have been learning about measuring temperature and made model thermometers. Next, we will learn about the different types of clouds, using a rain gauge, and the water cycle. Our next investigation is on the wind. We will use bubbles to see what way the wind is blowing, make pinwheels, learn what an anemometer and wind vane are used for, and make kites!
