Jag News
Weekly Updates for August 8 - 12
Message from the Principal
School is only 2 days away! Reminder that the first day of school is on Wednesday, August 10th. For those new to Johnson HS, typically the Jag News goes out every Monday night with information for the students, parents, & guardians, congratulations for students' accomplishments, upcoming events, and photos of our Jags in action!
It was a busy week back with teachers returning to get ready, counselors busy enrolling our new Jags, many of our groups practicing at school as they get ready for their upcoming seasons, and two great days of seeing our Jags at Prep Day and Cub Camp.
Two areas that we are going to be working with the students on to start the year are 1) Tardies and 2) Dress Code. Last year we spent too much time dealing with students late to class and wearing inappropriate for school clothes. We will be doing a Tardy Sweep to help get students to class on time. We will not count tardies for the first week or until we feel everyone has had a chance to learn their schedule. For Dress Code, last year definitely was too loose with reminders about inappropriate clothes. There will be consequences this year as summer attire is not appropriate for school (or most places of work). Please assist us with students making the right choice in what they wear to school.
Wednesday, 8/10/22, we will start with our new high school schedule. There has been a slight adjustment to the schedule, but overall very similar to last year. High school will start at 8:50 AM and finish at 4:15 PM every day. On Thursdays, we will have our Flex period time between 2nd and 3rd period classes. On certain Tuesdays (usually the last Tuesday of each month), there will be Early Dismissal for high school at 2 PM. This will give the teachers extra time for planning and professional development each month. The bell schedule is attached below.
All of the information and emails sent recently are attached below as reminders. Please continue to check your email as almost all information to be shared is sent through email. We are looking forward to a great 2022-23 school year for our Jags!
Sincerely,
Gary Comalander - Principal

Back To School Driving Safety!
The Johnson HS PTSA Smart Driving Club would like to remind you that school zones will soon be back in effect.
We are still several months aways from the installation of flashing school zones lights on Bulverde. School zones times are from 7-9 am and from 4-5 pm. There is a lot of construction and congestion complete with lane changes, light changes and speed changes along Bulverde near the campus and TPC.
There is no turning left onto Marshall Road at the moment.
Speed radars have been installed by District 9 to gather data and remind you to slow down.
Also, Bulverde Road from Evans to Bulverde Oaks is a work zone and driving violations in a work zone cost twice as much!
Your Jaguar Smart Driving Club students have been working with the city and county to develop ways to make this area safer for drivers, bike riders and pedestrians.
We are also working on ways to improve the flow of traffic on campus. Please be patient, slow down and stay off your cell phones when on campus.
The Smart Driving Club asks for your support. Please keep your eyes on the road and make safe choices every time you get behind the wheel.
Thank you,
Melinda Cox

First Day of School info letter
Johnson Students & Parents/Guardians,
First day, 8/10/22, everyone starts in Homeroom class at 8:50 AM. Homeroom assignments will be emailed out Tuesday evening to all students. Schedules will be posted for students and families to see on Thursday evening, 8/9, in the Student and Family Access portal. Students will be able to see all of their classes on the Schedule tab.
Teachers, administrators and counselors will be helping students find their Homeroom classroom on Wednesday morning. Reminder that parents/guardians cannot be in the building or hallways. If you need to see a counselor or nurse please check-in at the front entrance. We will take care of your children.
Reminder to Seniors, there is no late arrival class on Wednesday. All students start in their Homeroom class at 8:50 AM.
All CTEC and Cyber Institute students will stay on campus and report to the library during those class periods where they will meet with a teacher from the program.
Wednesday morning all students will report to their Homeroom class to start school. We will stay in this class as we account for every student. Each student will get their class schedule and go over the plan for the day. Students will go over some of the rules, requirements, and expectations while attending Johnson. This first day count is important as it can affect staffing at CTJ. Once we have an accurate student count, we will send students to their first period class.
Generic supplies needed for the first day will be something to write with and something to write on. Students can bring the rest of their supplies throughout the week.
Lockers
Any student can get a locker by going to the office to request one.
Water
Students may bring a durable water bottle with their name on it to refill with water during the day. Water bottle stations are available for refilling water bottles.
Textbooks
Students can check out textbooks during all lunches on Thursday and Friday of the first week of school.
Campus IDs
If students took a picture last year with Lifetouch, we will distribute them an ID Wednesday during Homeroom class. Student's who do not receive their ID card can go to the Library during their lunch starting on Thursday, to pick their ID up. We will make an announcement next week for students that need to get an ID made and when they can make one. Student's receive the first ID for free from the school. If an ID is lost, they will need to pay $5 dollars to get a new one made.
Other reminders for students and parents
- School hours are from 8:50 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Bell schedule attached.
- NEISD has a closed campus policy. Student cannot leave campus during school hours including lunchtime. This is considered Truancy.
- NEISD Dress Code is the expected dress at CTJ. Letter attached.
- Student parking is restricted to those with a parking permit. Violators will receive a ticket.
- Students are not allowed to go to their vehicle during school hours unless given permission from the front office.
- Food delivery service to the campus is not allowed. Example, students cannot order pizza during school hours. We will not accept food delivered, like Uber Eats. Parents bringing food for their student can drop off the food at the Welcome Center, but it is the responsibility of the student to come by and pick it up.
- All deliveries, such as gifts and/or flowers will be left at the Welcome Center and the student can pick the item up after school. We cannot deliver items to students at any time.
- Students cannot bring food items to share with other students unless it relates to a class activity.
- Picking up and dropping off students is to be done in the front of the school. Please do not go through the student parking lot to drop off or pick up students. We have many students moving to their cars, especially after school. Map attached with drop-off and pick-up spots and traffic flow direction. Thank you
Looking forward to seeing all of our students on Wednesday and to a great 2022-23 school year!
CTJ Safety Information letter
As we return to school for the 2022-23 school year, please understand their will be a big focus on the safety of all of our students, faculty, and staff. There will be some changes that have taken place that will cause an inconvenience for all of us but provide a safer environment.
1. As soon as school starts at 8:50 am, every exterior door will be locked. For students, this means if you arrive late to school, you will not be able to enter through the upper foyer doors from the courtyard. It will be very important for all students to arrive to school on-time. Yes, there is always a lot of traffic trying to get 3,200+ students on campus in the morning. Please, both parents and students driving to school, leave early and give yourself enough time to get through the light at Bulverde Road and through the parking lot so that your child will be in class on-time, 8:50 am. Easily, our highest number of tardies are for students being late to 1st period. If a school bus is late to campus, we will be giving those students a pass to class so that they do not get a tardy.
2. To help with all students being in class and helping teachers have the full class time to teach, we will be running our Tardy Sweep each class period. This is not new to Johnson HS, as we did tardy sweeps up through 2019-20. For the first couple of weeks, we will be doing the sweep to get students use to getting to class on-time, but will not start counting them immediately. We will announce when tardies will start to be counted. This should give all students plenty of time to learn the best path to get from one class to the next. This year every passing period on every day is 5 minutes.
3. Front door entrance during the school day - all visitors (parents, contractors, guests, etc) will need to have their ID out and show it at the entrance camera. Everyone already must show their ID once inside at the Welcome Center so it will simply involve having your ID out and ready when buzzing in. Please understand that this is for the safety of everyone. It will be an inconvenience if you have forgotten your ID, so please understand why.
Parents & Guardians, please understand that everything we are doing is to provide a safe environment for all of us. It will be inconvenient at times for students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians.
CTJ Bus Route information
For those students eligible for bus service to and from school, please read the following information.
-
Buses will depart from campus 10 minutes after school is released
-
Do not walk or run in front of or beside a moving bus.
-
The bus lane is the loop on the east end of the main building (closer to the marquee). Buses will be parked in two lines (an outside lane and an inside lane). The outside lane of buses refers to the buses parked closest to the street side of the school and the inside lane of buses refers to those parked closest to the school.
-
Morning drop-off: buses will drop off in the loop and students can move to the cafeteria/courtyard for breakfast or wait for school to start.
-
Afternoon departure: students will proceed immediately to the bus loop to find their bus.
-
Use the QR code below or URL to access the bus departure order daily from your cell phone. https://tinyurl.com/jhsbus20192020
-
If you do not have a cell phone the AP at the bus loop can help you.
For students/parents unsure if you have bus service or not and to determine information on bus routes can be accessed on the North East website using the info-finder: http://www.infofinderi.com/ifi/?cid=NEI05464638120
-
This site will tell you a) whether you have bus service; b) bus #; c) time bus picks up and drops off; d) location of pick-up/drop-off.
HS Bell Schedule for 22-23
I NEED TO TALK TO MY COUNSELOR BECAUSE I HAVE CONCERNS WITH MY SCHEDULE
Students will receive their class periods and teachers on Wednesday, 8/10, during Homeroom to start school.
At this time we are still balancing classes as we enroll new students. Students should not be repeating a course that they have already earned credit for. If you have any concerns that require a course change, please email your counselor.
Points to note regarding schedules and requests to change:
- At this time, we can make adjustments on the level (Regular, Honors, or AP) of your course by moving you up or moving you down.
- We can only do limited elective changes that relate to a cost or time commitment for the course. Elective changes can only be made in the following areas: Athletics, Band, Choir, Debate, Orchestra, ROTC, Spirit Organizations or Coop.
- Senior Release changes can only be considered if it does not impact class sizes.
- Please know that at this time there are no class periods or teachers. We can only change courses.
School Meals information letter
Congress did not extend the Covid waiver to feed all students at no charge that has existed the past two years. This year it returns to same setup as it was in 2019-20 regarding meal costs and qualifying for Free & Reduced Meals.
Free and Reduced Meals information
Students at our campus will need to complete an application for free/reduced price meals this year. Our District School Nutrition webpage contains important information about the application process, tutorial videos, and a link to the online application.
School Nutrition / Free and Reduced Price Meals (neisd.net)
The online application is preferred since it is submitted immediately to our District office, easier to complete, starts quicker, and is confidential.
Paper applications will be delivered to our campus soon and will be distributed to all students at that time. All submitted paper applications should be turned in to the cafeteria manager or main office so that we can process them.
Some NEISD campuses qualify for a program called CEP which continues to feed all students at these campuses for free, however, our campus is not eligible for CEP this year.
Meal Prices
Meal prices and prepayment information is on this page. Please take a look at prices and how a parent can make payments to a student account.

“Mr. Sharps and I could not be more proud of the Wind Ensemble members for their tenacity and determination through the spring of 2022," said Johnson HS Director of Bands Jarrett Lipman. "The final concerts in May were some of the most memorable and musical experiences I have ever experienced as a director, and the band members' enthusiasm and positive energy through the entire semester is something I’ll never forget. It was such an honor and joy to see the recordings recognized at the state level alongside the best high school concert bands in the nation.”
