HHS P.E. classes have been Cross-Country Skiing! Here are the Top 10 Health Benefits of Cross-Country Skiing:
· You get a full-body workout. Nordic skiing combines both a lower body and upper body workout, while simultaneously working both the “pulling” and “pushing” muscles of each region. The workout comes in the fact that you use your own locomotion to move through the terrain. Even muscles that don’t seem to be in use are actively involved to balance and coordinate the entire body.
· Burns lots of calories. Nordic skiing burns more calories than any other form of exercise or sport — up to 1,122 calories per hour for vigorous mountaineering!
· Improves cardiovascular endurance and health. Cross-country skiing is an excellent aerobic workout, and because no single muscle group is overstressed, the activity can be sustained for hours on end. Maintaining an elevated heart rate during exercise can strengthen and improve your heart’s capacity to pump blood efficiently and effectively.
· You have a higher level of physical fitness. Skiers are about 40 percent fitter than physically fit individuals, suggesting that the full-body workout provided by cross-country skiing is uniquely effective.
· It promotes social engagement. As cross-country skiing is easy to take-up and can be learned from a young age, it’s an ideal sport for family and friends to enjoy together.
· It helps relieve stress. Escaping town to the pine-forested wild provides you with some very therapeutic thinking time. The peace and tranquility that comes with snowfall is relaxing, helping you leave your stress behind, and give you a renewed sense of calm so you return home feeling refreshed.
· It’s highly functional. When you cross-country ski, you’re training your body to move in a way that it was designed to move. You’re teaching it to improve the process that makes you more capable in daily movements.
· It improves endurance. Forget energy drinks. Doing long-distance endurance sports like cross country skiing help improve your aerobic fitness, as well as running does, while making you feel ready to burst out of your skin with energy!
· Excellent form of cross-training. Cross-country skiing is a great way to prepare for summer sports; after cross-country skiing, muscles will be better prepared to manage the lactic acid they produce when they are used.
· Allows you to connect with nature. Cross-country skiing is a very pleasant way to enjoy the great outdoors on a sunny winter’s day and see the sights with friends — all while getting a good workout.

Vertical Agriculture is a new and smarter way to grow more produce and to save space as well as money. This type of farming has many different names and some of those are Indoor Farming, Vertical Farm, and Smart Farming. When large producers decide to make the change it will be a quicker and cheaper way to farm because it takes up half the land and grows twice the amount of produce.
Vertical agriculture is done normally in shipping containers that will end up getting thrown away and never used again. They put LED lights that put off strong light to encourage the plants to grow. When they do this, the plants can be controlled with how fast they grow. At the moment, most vertical growers are only producing starter plants that will then be transferred to fields. These starter plants are very valuable because they have such a high survival rate, even higher than greenhouse starter plants.
There are so many different types of Vertical Farming, like Hydroponics, which is when you can grow foods without soil. This is a good alternative if you live somewhere where you have a lot of natural fresh water but not beneficial if you live in dryer climates. Aeroponics is almost the same as the previous method. This one doesn’t require any soil but it needs very little water that is a very efficient plant-growing system for vertical farms. There are many other types but these ones are the best option if you were to do this at home.
You can do this at home and be extremely successful. It is a good alternative if you want to save space and/or grow more than normal. Certain types of plants do require soillike most nightshades but things like lettuce, peppers, and herbs do not. Growing your own foods can help with many health issues and this is one of the most efficient ways to get the most out of your gardening experience.

As you go through life there are many things that can shape you as a person, many things you can learn from and grow from. I have experienced this with the sport Hockey. I started playing hockey at the age of 5. My family members wanted me to be a figure skater. Yet, I was so young that I might not remember my first reaction to playing hockey, but there must be a reason I stuck with it. Hockey has caused me much stress but every second of pain is worth the reward.
Hockey is the sport where the players can control the game. In other major sports, like basketball and softball, the games are usually decided by the referees and umpires. In hockey, it is certain to an extent but otherwise the players have definite control of the level of the game. They can speed up the game, which makes it entertaining to watch the game, but they can also slow down the game and take their time on some plays and think of their next move.
Hockey is the most beneficial team sport because some sports, even though they are considered team sports, are sometimes monopolized by one of the athletes. In sports, like football where you have a quarterback, hockey has a team. Although you can have a superstar on the team. Hockey makes it possible for a team to play together. In hockey you must be on the same page if things are to work out in this sport and it makes the game overall better.
Hockey is a game of speed, not any other sport comes close to the speed of hockey. Everything about the sport is fast paced like the slap shots, the game pace, and the players. Every other sport, moves at a pace of other players. In hockey, there is no time for dozing off. Something always happens when you blink an eye. There is no stopping or breaks in this sport. You must survive four grueling periods, on top of seven months of practices and backbreaking plays.
Hockey is the sport that has its own lingo; hockey has a language of its own. No other sport requires a dictionary of words to decode what’s happening or occurring on the ice. Hockey having its own lingo can be hard at times if you don’t know what your other teammates are talking about, but it also makes hockey the greatest sport because of its unique language.
Hockey has its own traditions and superstitions. Other sports have their own traditions, but hockey has something more special. In hockey, some of the teams will grow out their facial hair for good luck; some teams will eat the exact same meal before each game. Although some others may think it is odd, these superstitions and traditions set hockey apart from all else.
The COVID Vaccine
December 14, 2020, we heard the spectacular news that COVID vaccines were being released to the public. 55 nationwide places had received vaccines by 12:00 p.m. around the US. The vaccine has not been approved by the FDA, as most vaccines start. It has, however, been under a EUA, (Emergency Use Authorization). After you take your first dose of the vaccine, you may have some side effects, which shows your body is building protection against the virus. Some people like to think that the COVID vaccine can kill people. This is fortunately not true, because none of the deaths reported after taking the vaccine have been linked or are in any way connected to taking the vaccine. 8,000 people die in the United States every day, and some of them might have just gotten that vaccine. The CDC has reported that some people have experienced severe allergic reactions from taking the vaccine. There is no way to know if you're allergic before taking the vaccine, so hospitals are prepared to help anyone that does happen to be allergic after the vaccine. In general, the vaccines do not hold much risk of death after receiving them.
How is Wrestling Good for the Body and Mind?
By: Reed C.
Folkstyle Wrestling is the form of wrestling that is practiced mostly in American High Schools and Colleges. It is also known as Collegiate Wrestling. Collegiate Wrestling emerged from the folk wrestling styles practiced in the early history of the United States. The object of Folkstyle Wrestling is to pin your opponent. Folkstyle scoring focuses mainly on changes in control. Taking an opponent down to the mat, escaping from or reversing control, or turning an opponent's back to the mat are all scoring situations.
Wrestling is a physical and mental sport. it challenges young children to young adults. The best way to learn from your mistakes is to look back and reflect on what you did in a match and what one could have done to make the match have a different outcome. Working out and determination are what helps you go from “fresh meat” to a determined “mat monster.” The mental game is half of the match. If you go into a match with a weak mental state but are in good physical shape, it'll be harder for you to win a match with bad thoughts, not allowing you to think clearly. As my coach likes to say, “Half the match is over before you even step on the mat.” This means that you have to believe you will win before you even start your match.
Difficulties in the South
By: Macy P.
This February, Texas is experiencing weather usually found in the North: freezing temperatures, snow, and dangerous power outages. Most Texans have never seen such cold temperatures and they don’t have the resources to deal with it; their houses don’t have the preparations for this weather and with power outages, they’re left with homes that are unlivable. 325,000 Texans are currently without power, many cities are shutting off water because the pipe system in their homes isn’t meant for freezing temperatures; the citizens don’t have the knowledge and experience that are needed to keep their houses safe. Many homes are being destroyed because of bursting pipes; their homes are flooded with water and then the water freezes.
With so many homes being freezing cold or flooded, many Texans have resulted to sleeping or even living in their cars, desperately trying to protect their children and even their pets. Fish tanks are frozen solid, and people are protecting their hot-climate lizards with blankets. Many people are desperate for warmth, but so is the wildlife. Sea turtles are becoming too cold to the point of paralysis, and birds are desperately searching for areas and roads that have water since everything is iced over, they’re also relying on bird feeders, since their usual food is covered by snowfall.
Many Northerners are quick to laugh at Texas, since we’ve been experiencing this drastic weather without so many issues. But in places like McCall ID, there are various ways we are prepared for cold winters. We have plows, salt trucks, fireplaces, slow speed limits, proper insulation, snow tires, etc. Texas is completely unprepared, just like how Idahoans would be unprepared for Texas weather (100-degree summers). Another tragic aspect of Texas’s winter this year is their cars and roads being unprepared. Not only are their cars not all meant for snow, but many drivers don’t know how to stay safe on the roads. On February 12, highway I-35 in Fort Worth, Texas experienced a tragic multi-vehicle pileup that caused 6 deaths. There were over 100 vehicles involved in the crash and multiple semi-trucks were sliding into the pile of cars. This highway doesn’t have any shoulders, so the cars that were sliding on ice had nowhere to go but to crash into the people in front of them.
This winter in the South is clearly a tragedy that should have been avoided with proper precautions taken by counties and the state. But we can’t blame them for their lack of preparation because this is new territory for most of them and their large population is difficult to protect all at once. Hopefully their ice storm will pass, and they’ll be back to their warm houses and safe wildlife soon.
MCPAWS Animal Shelter
By Chloe V.
MCPAWS is one of the most well-known adoptive animal shelters in Valley County. They do not put down animals, they rescue them and take care of them until they are ready for a home. There are a few steps to adopting a pet, you must fill out a questionnaire and make an appointment. You can adopt a cat/kittens or dog/puppies. MCPAWS is located at 831 S 3rd St, McCall ID 83638. You can also contact them at 208-634-3647. There are multiple dogs and cats ready for adoption, such as Spitfire. She is a domestic shorthair and is only 2 years old. She is a lovable, playful kitty who loves to be inside and outside. She loves to play with her best friend (her toy ball). Then we have a dog named Foxtail. He is a 1-year-old corgi/chihuahua mix. He weighs 13 pounds! He is a little bit shy but could use someone to help bring him out of his shell. He loves the ladies! He would also love to have a mellow dog or kitty to be his friend. Those are just some of the available animals; there are many more ready to be adopted. Here are some of the questions on the questionnaire.
