BARBER BULLETIN
Week of April 23-27 Creating Joyful Leaders and Learners
Moving Beyond Titles
Of course, to start, our students and our faculty should learn the names of the habits. But over time, moving from a simple understanding to application and evaluation (Bloom’s Taxonomy) should be the goal. It is here that students will be able to truly apply the habits in their lives. There is so much more to each habit than a simple phrase. In fact, there are key principles taught within each habit.
Below are just a few examples:
Habit 1: Be Proactive • Take responsibility for your life and your actions. • Think before you choose your response. • Take initiative to make things happen.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind • Have a plan, a recipe, or a blueprint before you write, bake, or build something. • Create a Personal Mission Statement to help direct your life. • Develop one or two WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) for the next three months and strive to accomplish them.
Habit 3: Put First Things First • Manage your time so your most important things get the attention they deserve. • Say no to less important things. • Stay true to your important things even when distractions happen.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win • Balance courage for what you want with consideration for what others want. • Have an Abundance Mentality and don’t be threatened by the successes of others. • Build Emotional Bank Accounts with others.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood • Listen to others’ ideas and feelings in a sincere way.• Seek to know your audience before addressing them in writing or speaking. • Be confident in voicing your own ideas.
Habit 6: Synergize • Value the differences of other people. • Fix problems by talking them through in a non-defensive way. • Learn to brainstorm with others to create new ideas.
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw • Take care of yourself. • Be a curious, constant learner. • Build a strong network of friends.
To illustrate the potential of a deeper understanding of the 7 Habits, think about Habit 3 and how you might teach your students to apply it.
You could do any of the following:
- Have students determine the seven or eight most important things in their lives and then prioritize them from top to bottom.
- Ask students to evaluate if they are giving their first things the proper time and attention.
- Put students into small groups and have them brainstorm ways the classroom could be organized to emphasize first things first.
- Ask students to write a short paper on how they can say no when pressured by distractions.
- Have students track how much time they spend doing unimportant things, such as playing mindless video games for too many hours.
The 7 Habits represent a holistic approach to becoming effective personally and interpersonally. They help students build the 21st-century life skills that are so needed in today’s competitive and collaborative society.

SC READY PREPARATION
Teachers,
It is highly recommended that your students practice using the tools prior to testing. I have included the LINK to the online training/practice. Please let testing coordinator, Jennifer Gillespie, know if you have any questions.
Leading Up Application
Participants study the qualities that make an effective leader, analyze individual leadership roles and assess their personal leadership style and skill. They are challenged to apply their skills by taking leadership roles within their schools, departments, and the district.
Each participant will have exposure to leadership roles in the district, participate in shared readings, complete a Passion Project, and receive re-certification hours upon completion of the seven leadership development sessions. The overall outcome is for each participant to leave with the confidence to lead from where you are.
Attendance requirements reflect the commitment necessary to fully nurture and develop personal leadership skills. Participants and their supervisors must be willing to commit the necessary time to fully participate in the program. Attendance is expected for all sessions. Please check over schedules thoroughly to ensure no conflicts with dates and times.
