Valentine's Day Party Reminder
FEB. 16: BLACK HISTORY MONTH BOTTLE BUDDY PROJECT COMPETITION DUE
This year we are recognizing historical African-Americans by celebrating Black History Month with a Bottle Buddy project. A “Bottle Buddy” is a representation of a person who has made a significant contribution to our world. It is a “dressed-up” 2-liter bottle with a Styrofoam ball to serve as the Bottle Buddy’s head. When you create a “Bottle Buddy” people should be able to recognize the famous person (or at least make some good guesses) by the clothes he/she wears and the telling accessories you use to support your representation.
Crockett students will vote on the winning bottles. A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbon and medal will be awarded. Although this is a competition, the purpose is educational. Students are encouraged to study someone they are not familiar with to make this a more worthwhile learning experience.
Materials needed for the bottle:
1 plastic bottle (small water or soda bottle, 2 liter, ketchup bottle, dish soap, etc.)
Sand, dirt, or gravel to put in the bottle to anchor it
Items to decorate your bottle to look like the person that you researched (paint, yarn, googly eyes, colored paper, etc.)
Directions for the project
Clean the bottle
Place sand or dirt inside the bottle so it won’t tip over (just a little)
Use something to form a three-dimensional head. Decorate the “head” to look like your famous African-American (styrofoam ball, wooden spoon, large button, tennis ball, ping pong ball, don’t forget to give the person hair!)
Construct arms for the bottle person by using pipe cleaners, cardboard, straws, or other items and fix them in place. Adding something to the bottom for shoes or feet is optional.
Use materials such as fabric, paper, felt, yarn, etc. to make an outfit for your person that would be typical of what was worn during the person’s life.
Glue clothing around entire bottle
Keep in mind, when the project is finished, it should look like a doll.
People should be able to see all around so the whole thing should be decorated.
Students must have a label with figure name, student name, grade level, and teacher.
Projects must be sent with student and not dropped off at the front office.
Optional:
Bottle Buddy Research
This part of the project is not required to enter the competition, however, it is a great opportunity for your student to learn about prominent figures.
The student will research along with your help on the internet for information on the person.
Full name
Birthplace
Childhood
Schooling up to university level
Hardship in life
Contributions to society
Note for parents
Help your student get a book at the library/find reliable sources to use on the internet
Help get required materials for the project
Help student with hot glue/scissors
We appreciate your support with this project and can’t wait to see the finished product!

FEB. 28- MARCH 4: READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK
MATH CORNER: Math Fact Fluency
Math fact fluency is the ability to quickly recall addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts through conceptual learning, fact strategies, and memorization.
Math fluency is important because it…
✨contributes to students’ ability to solve more difficult problems quicker and more accurately.
✨leads to success in students’ future mathematics courses and careers.
✨builds confidence in students’ math ability.
This year, each grade level has made a commitment to a set of facts. We will be posting weekly tips via Facebook and our newsletter. We look forward to working together to ensure mastery of our math fact commitments!

PROMPT & PRESENT ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE
Your student will receive a popcorn and pickles party when he/she comes to school 98% of the time of each week. Each day that a grade level is present, a disc will be dropped in a game board. When a grade level fills their column they will receive a Popcorn & Pickle Party.
AFTER SCHOOL TUTORIALS
STUDENT HEADPHONES
We are asking each student to bring in a pair of headphones or earbuds that could be plugged into an Apple iPad. For health reasons, it is important that students have their own headphones or earbuds so they are not sharing with other students.
Please send the headphones or earbuds in a zippered plastic baggie labeled with your child’s name or you may write your child's name directly on the headphones.LUNCH VISITORS
Due to the dramatic rise of COVID in recent weeks, Goose Creek CISD is reversing the decision to allow parents and family members on campus during lunches for the month of January. This decision will be reassessed at the end of January.
