Sipley is a Title I School
At Curriculum Night, parents who attended signed a sheet as they entered the gym. The purpose of that is to share evidence with the US Department of Education that our parents are aware that John L. Sipley School is a Title I school. The following is what was shared with parents:
John L. Sipley School has been designated a Title I school and as a result receives money from the US Department of Education. Title I is the federal program that provides funding to local school districts to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students. We use this money to meet our school improvement goals by hiring Title I teaching assistants, who provide reading intervention to students identified as needing support in language arts.
The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.
What Are We Up To?
- We are teaching science and social studies over six, six week periods. This will allow teachers to go into depth by spending more time in one content. Students will have six weeks of science and six weeks of social studies each trimester.
- Ah, trimesters. That is new as well. We will have three grading periods versus four. Trimester one ends on November 3.
- We added a third Title I Teaching Assistant this year. Two of our Title I teaching assistants will focus their attention on working with students in grades kindergarten through grade three with the goal being that all students read at grade level by the end of grade three. Our third teaching assistant will partner with a learning behavior specialist to work with students in grades four through six using Read 180. Students in grades four through six who are reading significantly below grade level measured by STAR Reading and Fountas and Pinnell assessments will be in a Read 180 class in lieu of content, which will begin in early October.
- We acquired Eureka Math, which we are excited about.
- As a staff, we are learning more about CHAMPS: A Proactive & Positive Approach to Classroom Management. Our staff is taking part in two workshops on 9/22 and 10/31 to learn more about CHAMPS.
