CAPSTONE CELEBRATION ~ Thursday, May 7
Capstone ~ A multifaceted task that serves as a culminating, integrative, intellectual academic experience
Creative & Innovative
Last week during the seminar, teachers received the task for their Capstone Celebration.
First-year teachers:
- Design and create a 3-Dimensional Model that symbolizes your professional growth.
Second-year teachers:
- Indite a Poem accompanied by an illustration that expresses your professional growth.
Each teacher will write an explanation of the evolution of the task from his/her first hearing the task through its completion.
Producing the 3-D model and composing the poem require a plethora of interactions: recall, rumination, higher-order thinking, metaphorical thinking, planning and organization, right and left brain integration, hand-and-brain coordination, literacy, cognition and metacognition, multiple intelligences, emotions, productive struggle, and more.
These tasks relate to several bodies of research.

- Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DOK): Level 4
- Robert Marzano: Similarities & Dissimilarities (20 percentile gain in overall proficiency)
- John Hattie: Metacognitive Processing: Effect Size of 0.69 and Organizing Conceptual Knowledge: Effect Size of 0.85. (0.69 = 1.73 yrs of growth per one year of instruction; 0.85 = 2.12 yrs. growth per one year of instruction) (from Visible Learning)
