Smoke Detectors!

In light of the recent house fire in Annapolis, it is timely to revisit smoke detector safety. In October, the American Society of Home Inspectors released a new recommendation regarding home smoke alarms. Stating a thorough review of multiple new study findings from both the Underwriters Laboratories and Texas A&M University, ASHI's new belief is that "given the current state of smoke alarm technology, ASHI advocates the use of photoelectric smoke alarms and discourages the use if ionization smoke alarms. ASHI recommends that homeowners replace existing ionization alarms with photoelectric alarms."

In short, the study found two important factors affecting the overall efficacy of smoke alarms: nuisance alarms and fire material type. Traditional ionization alarms, as anyone who has burned something in the oven or smoked up a kitchen making bacon can attest, have a nasty tendency to go off without an active flame source present. The tiny hot particles in the smoke activate the sensor, exactly as is designed. However, this has lead to a significant trend of disabling the detectors to prevent nuisance alarms. Photoelectric alarms have been found to be substantially less prone to nuisance alarms due to the difference in sensor methodology. More alarming, however, was the laboratory's findings that traditional ionization alarms were not only slower at detecting smoldering fires, but that they failed in 91% of their tests to detect smoldering fires at all in synthetic materials, like foam mattresses or nylon carpeting. As synthetic materials become more pervasive in homes, the risk that a smoke alarm may completely fail to function is a startling concern, and this has directly lead to ASHI's revised position.
