ATTENDANCE AWARENESS
Dear Puma Community,
ATTENDANCE MATTERS! That is why Raymond Park IA has joined with other schools across the nation in recognizing how important attendance is in preparing students to be college, career, and life ready. As many as 7 million students miss nearly a month of school every year - absences that correlate with poor performance at every grade level.
Consistent attendance must start at an early age. Chronic absenteeism and habitual truancy are important predictors of school performance, including high school graduation. Absenteeism in the first few months of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year, which can also influence whether students read proficiently by the end of the third grade. By sixth grade, chronic absence, which is defined as missing 18 or more days per school year becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. When students improve their attendance rates they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
If a student is chronically absent by the time they are a senior in high school, over a year of instructional time has been lost. At Raymond Park IA, we are committed to tracking not only unexcused absences but also excused absences that can derail a student’s academic performance. It is our intention to reduce the number of all instructional days that are lost. Even late arrivals to school and early departures lead to lost instructional time.
We are continuing to work with you - our stakeholders - to help everyone understand how chronic absences negatively affect the long-term success of students. We also recognize that factors, including illness, can contribute to poor student attendance. Once we identify these obstacles, we try to direct families to solutions or resources to relieve the problems that are contributing to these absences.
Please reach out to me if needed so I can connect you and your child with the supports needed for a continued successful school year!
A missed day is a missed opportunity,
