The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
September 14, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Beaverton School District's 90-minute early release on Wednesday afternoons allow educators time to collaborate and participate in professional development opportunities. The Early Release/Teacher Collaboration webpage has an FAQ and an animated video (English & Spanish) explaining Early Release and Teacher Collaboration. Check it out for more information.
The first Wednesday of each month is designed for school staff to collaborate as a whole around school-wide professional development and goal setting. During the month of September, Cedar Mill staff engaged in discussion around collectively supporting student learning and growth to ensure success for ALL of students. This involved an examination of the instructional core, including the relationship between the teacher, content, student engagement, and the instructional task. Our primary goal around our instructional framework goal aims to focus our learning as a staff around furthering consistent curriculum implementation in all classrooms. This past Wednesday, teams met to collaborate on their curricular goals for the year and explore other professional development opportunities during next week's early release collaboration, among other things.
Today, Cari Carbullido, a 5th grade student from Mrs. Gotting's class, had the chance to be "Principal for a Day," which was the result of a drawing last spring at the Cedar Mill Carnival. As a part of the day, she helped greet families in the parking lot at arrival, led the all-school gathering, visited classrooms, and had the opportunity to be a part of several meetings. Another highlight of her day was visiting classrooms and leaving teachers notes about what they are doing well to support their students. She assisted in the design of the Gotcha drawing stickers recipients receive every other week as well. Principal Carbullido had a very successful and productive day!
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain, Principal

Fun Run is Fast Approaching!
The Fun Run is fast approaching! Deadlines for classroom pizza parties are on Wednesday 9/19, and the actual run takes place on Friday 9/21!
If you haven’t had a chance, this weekend would be a great time to get your student’s online fundraising page set up through Pledgestar.com/cedarmill.
Pizza parties will be awarded on Wednesday for: 1) The class with highest percent participation, and 2) The class with highest percentage of students who have sent out 5 or more invites via pledge star. On 10/1 we’ll award the grande finale pizza party to the classroom raising the most funds overall.
We’ll have t-shirts for all students to wear again this year so they can help support lumberjack school spirit all year long! They will be available for students in each classroom the morning on the fun run.
Does your company have a matching donation program? If so, but you have questions about how it works, email FunRun@cedarmillptc.org.
Thanks so much for all your support for the PTC annual fun run! It’s our largest, and primary fundraiser of the year providing support for field trips, technology, school supplies, class reimbursement funds, library books, and more. With support from our sponsors of the event, we were able to help fund the InnovatED carts for each classroom. This year our goal is $50,000.
Thanks!

Volunteering Updates
Effective with the 2018-2019 school year, all Cedar Mill volunteers will need to have a current, up-to-date profile to get emails about specific classroom volunteer opportunities.
Traditionally, school-wide volunteer needs have been set up in the volunteer system, while individual teacher/classroom volunteer needs have been managed in various ways. This year, all school volunteer opportunities will be coordinated through myvolunteerpage.com!
To ensure you receive emails on specific classroom volunteer needs, you must update your profile on your MyVolunteer page! Directions on how to update your profile are attached to this email. The process is very simple and should take you just a couple of minutes. Once your profile is updated, you will receive emails when your child's teacher has specific classroom volunteer needs. (If you are a grandparent or other community volunteer, please update your profile to reflect the teachers of the children with whom you are associated.)
When completing your profile and entering a teacher’s name, it’s critical to remember that the only suitable options for teacher names are listed in the table below.
Please do not enter any other teacher name (including prefixes, etc.) other than those you see listed above. If your profile is either not up-to-date, is incomplete or filled out incorrectly, you will not get classroom specific volunteer emails and will miss out on the opportunity to volunteer in your child’s classroom!
If you have any issues updating your profile, please reach out to Lindsay Tosky, the Volunteer Coordinator at Cedar Mill. Lindsay can be reached at volunteercoord@cedarmillptc.org.
Thank you for taking the time to make this critical update to your MyVolunteer page profile!
Talking about Personal Safety with Children
You’ve likely heard the term “stranger danger,” the idea that children need to be wary of strangers. Did you know that many organizations, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), doesn’t support the “stranger danger” message? Here’s why. NCMEC says children do not fully understand the concept and are confused by the idea of “good” and “bad” strangers. They will often describe a stranger as someone who is “ugly or mean” and don’t perceive “nice-looking or friendly” people as strangers.
NCMEC suggests empowering children with positive messages and safety skills that “will not only build their self-esteem and self-confidence, but also help keep them safer.” This includes learning how to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations, as well as learning effective steps to remove themselves from the situation.
It is important to teach children in a way that allows them to understand the situation without scaring them. Here are a few tips for parents:
- Instruct children to always join a friend when walking or biking to and from school.
- Teach children to never take short-cuts or go into isolated areas.
- Walk the route with your child, pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they need
- help. A safe place can be a police station, fire station, church or retail shop along the route.
- Make sure your child knows that adults shouldn’t ask children for help.
- Teach children to trust their feelings if they feel uncomfortable, scared or confused.
- Teach children that it is more important to get out of a threatening or uncomfortable
- situation, than it is to be polite.
Please see the attached discussion guides offering age-appropriate messages and strategies.
Educating & Supporting the Whole Child
Happy Friday Parents! Mrs. Blakeslee and Mrs. Hargrave will be working together promoting and teaching SEL at Cedar Mill. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children & adults apply the skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, establish & maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is a valuable addition to our curriculum and involves educating & supporting the whole child. We want to ensure that all our students are gaining skills that they can use throughout their lives. Our goal is to provide support for parents thru the Lumberjack Edge with tips and articles that you can use at home to help your child thrive at school. In this edition we will focus on how to have meaningful conversations about school.
Perhaps you’ve had a similar conversation with your child at the end of the day -
“How was school?”
“Fine.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
Having meaningful conversations with your child about school enriches their lives and shows support; it also helps teach problem solving and life skills. However, asking questions that elicit more of a response than “Fine” can be challenging. The link below has 50 open ended questions that should prompt your child to elaborate on his/her day at school. https://herviewfromhome.com/50-questions-to-ask-your-kids-instead-of-asking-how-was-your-day/
It is our hope that we will be able to provide you with useful tips and information throughout the year as we partner together to make this a great year. We welcome your feedback, questions, and support. Have a great weekend.

Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant K-8
The Beaverton School District has been awarded a $669,484 Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is in year two of the three year grant. The Beaverton School District (BSD) has developed a comprehensive project to improve the quality of physical education in the District, increase physical activity before, during, and after school, and create a school culture of wellness and activity that improves student health, nutrition, social/emotional development, and learning outcomes. In addition to the grant funds, the District has developed several community partnerships to support the project including Nike and Tualatin Hills for a contribution of over $235,000. The BSD program will serve more than 28,000 K-8 students. As part of this grant there is required data that must be collected on physical activity, nutrition and physical fitness. Please read the attached form with more information about the data collection. If after reading you decide your student will not participate in the data collection, print, sign and send the form back to the Cedar Mill main office before September 25th.
School Safety is a Priority
Maintaining a safe school environment is a priority of the Beaverton School District. Many factors are critical to fostering a “Safe School Climate”. A critical ingredient in creating a safer school environment is classroom response to an incident at school. Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff and administration, in partnership with our first responders.
The Beaverton School District, in collaboration with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), Beaverton Police (BPD) and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue (TVFR), has implemented the Standard Response Protocol (SRP).
The SRP is not based on one individual possible scenario but on the response to any given scenario. One large benefit of the SRP is the standard language used by all responders; this includes students, parents, staff and first responders. The protocol also allows for a predictable series of actions as an event unfolds.
The SRP is based upon four actions: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter. Each has specific staff and student directives that are unique to the action.
Do you know the difference between a Lockout and a Lockdown? Watch the following video to find out! https://youtu.be/jkhAfTtYRTE
SchoolMessenger Notification System
The Beaverton School District uses the SchoolMessenger notification system to send automated phone calls, emails and texts to parents, guardians, students and staff. These include attendance notifications, inclement weather messages, and important reminders.
SchoolMessenger InfoCenter:
Parents can update their notification preferences via SchoolMessenger InfoCenter. Visit the SchoolMessenger InfoCenter website https://infocenter.schoolmessenger.com/, or download the app.
Check out this quick video on how to manage your preferences.
