February Specials
Mrs. Johns:
In physical education, we have just finished our unit on “foot skills” -- students learned about basic soccer footwork including dribbling, trapping, passing and kicking. After practicing our skills, we used them in various games like dribble tag, striker ball, four goal soccer and sideline soccer. This month we are starting our unit on ball handling and dribbling skills and will incorporate activities using basketball and tennis. Students will also get to do some yoga and dance to burn some energy to get through these long, cold winter days!
Ms. Matelski:
In the library this month we will be working on building our comprehension skills. We will be discussing the main idea of the stories we read, how to use what we know to predict what will happen next and how we can use illustrations as clues. Have your child practice these skills with you at home when reading together!
Ms. Sobleskey:
In Art, we just finished celebrating our differences and uniqueness by creating our own portraits in a crayon and finished by adding each to their classroom crayon box. We are now working on different skills in each grade level, including cutting skills, use of lines, pattern, and color theory. Projects will be created using the different skills.

Early Math Input from Parents
Michigan has developed a list of Early Math Instructional Practices that align very well with our K-5 math program, Bridges. They are looking for input from parents about their child's experiences in math. Please consider taking this brief survey so they can better provide supports to families across Michigan.
Collaboration Opportunities for Parents
The Kent County ISD has several upcoming opportunities to support parents. Please check out the Kent ISD Caregiver Newsletter which includes registration details for all events occurring through the remainder of the year.
The newsletter includes:
- Special Education for Parents: What Every Parent Should Know (February)
- Parent Collaboration Series (February-June)
- KDL Story Time: Different by Heather Avis (March 1st)
- Surviving to Thriving (March 23)
Feeding MI Families Survey
The University of Michigan is conducting a survey with parents/guardians about whether or not they have had to worry about feeding their families. They are offering a $25 gift card for completing the survey and another $50 gift card for completing a follow up interview. If you are interested in participating, please click on the flyer below.
