ACCESS TESTING CONTINUES THIS WEEK...
Federal and state laws require that English learner (EL) students be assessed annually to measure their proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English, as well as the progress they are making in learning English. In fulfillment of these laws, EL students are required to participate in ACCESS for ELLs tests, which replaced MEPA tests beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.
ACCESS for ELLs are administered once annually in January-February.
DSA is still looking for parents interested in serving the school in any number of ways.

High School Debate Team soars!
The high school debate team attended their third tournament this Friday at Suffolk University. Kolanji Jordan (2023) and Emilio Mendes (2021) both competed as Mavericks (solo-debaters) in the Novice division, Kolanji won his first debate at the high school level and finished 1-1, and while Emilio didn't pick up a win this tournament, the judge of one of his debates called it the best at this division she has probably ever seen! Juan Geronimo Ortiz and Farris Omar (2023) competed together in the Junior Varsity division and went 2-0 not only winning each debate, but both being the highest rated debaters in each of their debates. Calvin Tran (2022) also Mavericked in the Varsity division and went 2-0, his first tournament at this highest level without a loss.
Mr. Nelson also got to judge his first debate, which adds $25 to the team's budget and helps support our students' practices. We encourage you to come judge as well or to attend one of our remaining two tournaments on Feb. 8th and March 13th/14th (City Championships) as a spectator.
BAM STUDENT EDGAR SANTANA BAEZ AND BAM COUNSELOR MYLES LAYNE
BAM!
Program Overview BAM is in full swing now, we have two ninth grade groups and one eighth grade group and working on a seventh grade group. These last two weeks BAM has had a lot of successful youth engagement. Over the christmas vacation BAM partnered with the Boston Celtics for a mentoring event at the Celtics practice facility that included many Dearborn scholars. We also had an amazing BAM wide basketball tournament at TechBoston Academy that our Dearborn scholars also participated in. After a successful event with the Celics one of our Dearborn scholars and I had the amazing opportunity to sit court side at a recent Celtics home game.
Student Participation Currently here in Dearborn we have 65 total young men enrolled in BAM. Through the first half of the year attendance has been a minor issue that I may have rectified by talking to a couple of teachers.
Curriculum Progress As of right now we are currently working on the BAM core value; Integrity. I am working on instilling in the scholars through our curriculum that their values equal their actions and what that means in their everyday lives.
Skill Development One of the skills I am also working on through the BAM curriculum is Responsible Decision Making. I have spoken with a few teachers that have BAM scholars in their classes and one of the biggest issues I have come across is the unnecessary racist and inappropriate jokes that are looked at by the scholars as innocent because they are friends. I am working on helping them see that perception goes a long way and their decision making has to be better on choosing when and where to engage in their “jokes”.
I will continue these updates biweekly and I hope to hear from you all with feedback. If there is anything needed from me around the building feel free to ask me because it takes a community.
