Welcome to the New School Year

TJMS Families,

Welcome to the new school year. I am very excited to get the school year started with our first student day being on August 11th. I am looking forward to this year as much as I ever have, thanks, in part, to the hard work our students, families and staff have put in to help create an environment within the school that is as safe as possible with respect to COVID.

Our newsletter to begin the school year has a great deal of information included. Please take a few minutes to carefully review the information included below.

Sincerely,

Mark Maudlin

New Student Orientation - August 10th

Incoming 6th graders and new 7th and 8th graders are welcome to attend orientation on Tuesday, August 10th from 8:00-10:15 a.m. Buses will be running for orientation. Bus information will soon be available in Skyward Family Access.

Students should bring a copy of their class schedule and locker combination with them to orientation.

Car riders should plan to be dropped off and picked up at door #5 on the east side of the building near the baseball fields. Please see below for additional information about the traffic pattern for car riders.

Students will have the opportunity to attend each of their classes in a shortened format, meet their teachers, practice their lockers as well as learn about the arrival and dismissal processes. Students will begin their day in the cafeteria before moving to their 1st period class.

Parents of new students as well as students who are returning to TJMS should not plan to attend orientation.

Car Riders

Family members of car riders, please carefully review the traffic pattern that cars (green and yellow lines) and buses (white and yellow lines) should follow for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Please use the following guidelines to enhance safety for students and to speed the drop off/pick up process.

  • Enter and exit the drop off lines through the soccer/football field entrance
  • The south drive along the side of the building as it is reserved for buses
  • Use the 2 lanes (parallel green lines on the may) when entering and merge as you make the right turn toward the back of the building
  • Please pull as far down the drive past door #5 as possible to allow multiple cars to unload at the same time along the sidewalk next to the building
  • Students can enter door #4 or #5
  • Leave the area with the red dashed line open so buses can enter the south drive
  • Exit using a single line going to the lane closest to Roosevelt Road as you return to the exit of the parking lot
  • Students should not cross the south drive to meet someone picking them up

Supply Lists

Supply lists are posted on our website as well as linked below.

6th grade supply list

7th grade supply list

8th grade supply list

P.E. Uniforms

P.E. uniforms will be required in P.E. classes this school year. Uniforms (t-shirt and shorts) can be purchased at Blythe’s Sporting Goods on Calumet Avenue. Uniforms can be purchased as a set ($20) or individual pieces (shorts @ $12.50/t-shirt @ $7.50). The same uniform will be worn in 6th-8th grades, so purchasing one that’s a little looser may be a good idea. Students are welcome to use the uniform an older sibling used while attending TJMS.

Students who are not enrolled in band, choir or orchestra will have a full year of P.E. Students enrolled in band, choir or orchestra will have least 2 rotations of P.E. during the year.

School Calendar and Times

The 2021-2022 Valparaiso Community Schools calendar can be found here.

Our school day runs from 7:50 a.m. -- 2:50 p.m. Students may enter the building at 7:20 through door #8 to eat breakfast or at 7:35 to head to their lockers and 1st period class.

Sport Physicals

A sports physical dated on or after April 1, 2021 is good for the 2021-2022 school year. If your student is planning to tryout or participate in a sport this school year, please don't wait until just before the season begins to schedule a physical. A physical done this summer or fall is good for winter and spring sports as well. All forms in this packet need to be completed and turned into the main office as one packet.

Fall Athletic Seasons

Fall sports are almost here. Please see above regarding sport physicals needed to begin any sport. Please click on the appropriate link below for more information about fall sports information, tryouts and/or practices:

7th and 8th Grade Volleyball

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Cross Country

7th and 8th Grade Football

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Gymnastics

Student Handbook

Each student will receive a student planner early in the school year. Included in that planner is a copy of the TJMS student handbook. The handbook can also be found here. Please encourage your student to keep their daily planner up to date with class due dates and other important classroom, grade level or school wide dates.

Attendance

Please call the main office at 531-3140 by 8:15 a.m. if your child is absent from school. If we have not received a call by 8:15 a.m. and your child is marked absent from school, you will received a automated phone call alerting you of his/her unexcused absence.

Becoming A Canvas Observer

Parents are encouraged to become an observer of your child in Canvas. Being an observer will allow you to monitor your student's work, assignments, etc that are assigned through Canvas. To see more about how to sign up as a Canvas observer, click here.

Dropping Off Forgotten Items

From time to time students do forget things at home that they may need during the school day (i.e. music instrument, lunch, chromebook, etc). If this occurs, items may be dropped off on the table in the front lobby, just inside door #1. Please make sure your student's name and grade level are clearly marked. We will then email your student to let him/her know to stop by the main lobby to pick up the item(s). Please encourage your students to check his/her school email account a few times throughout the school day.
