Don't Panic!
“And as he drove on, the rainclouds dragged down the sky after him, for, though he did not know it, Rob McKenna was a Rain God. All he knew was that his working days were miserable and he had a succession of lousy holidays. All the clouds knew was that they loved him and wanted to be near him, to cherish him, and to water him.”
- Douglas Adams, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
I was happy to see "Hitchhiker" make it onto the Great American Read list. The Read is a program that PBS is running from their premier show on May 22nd through October 18th that encourages people to vote for their favorites among a list of 100 novels that they've determined are America's best loved. To find out how many of them you've already read, take the quiz. I was very honest in my answers, I didn't count the ones I had started but not finished or only seen as a movie, and scored 61. Since then I have started working my way through the ones I missed, - with mixed results. It turns out, I didn't read some of these books because I knew I wouldn't like them. It's a good list, though, with a wide variety of titles - both classic and very much not - to love and to hate. Vote for your favorites and root for the stinkers to lose.
We were fortunate to receive a grant to create events and programs based on the Great American Read I have already been in contact with Battenkill Books, Joe Donahue, The Chronicle and WMHT and we're coming up with some great ideas for this summer and fall. I'll publish details as they become available.
Speaking of reading, and we usually are, we are quickly coming up on Summer Reading season. This year's theme is "Libraries Rock" and we are exploring both the musical and the geological possibilities. Kelly Stone, our youth coordinator, has been working with the Greenwich Central School and several of our sister libraries in the region to make this the best summer ever for kids to have fun, read a lot and avoid the dreaded summer slide. Our festivities will kick off at Whipple City and continue throughout the summer. Look for a separate flyer in the next few days.
Last but not least, we will be finishing up two grant-funded building projects, prepping for a third and starting to plan for our next grant application. This time, we're looking at the main floor of the library. It's been more than a decade since the big renovation and it's time to assess how well the space serves our current and anticipated needs. The public is invited to a brainstorming session where you'll be able to vote with stickers, play with models, help create idea boards and tell us what your dream library would look like. Mark June 29th on your calendar. We'll be here from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. It's dinner time, so we'll be providing pizza and beverages. We'd love it if you could let us know if you're coming, so we can order enough food.
I'm tired out just writing about all this but looking forward to a busy, fun, educational and active summer at the library. I hope to see you a lot. If I look a little stressed, just wave your towel at me.
