News from the Art Room
Greetings from the Prairie Point Art room!
So much learning is happening in the art room these days. The first trimester we focus on portraits, abstract art and non-objective art. A portrait is an artwork of a person or animal, especially the face. An abstract artwork is meant to look like something we know but it has been changed in some way. A non-objective artwork is not meant to look like anything in particular. It is primarily lines, shapes and colors arranged carefully in a composition.
Kindergarten recently created color books. We practiced coloring with crayon. Each page had letters to trace, an image to color and a frame. Careful coloring covered all the white and stays in the line. Practice at home with crayon coloring will strengthen little fingers.
First grade has been learning about lines and portraits. Straight, wavy, zig zag, and loopy are the lines we know best. We even have a line song with a pretend invisible marker we keep in our pocket. Portraits are fun! Portraits can show feelings. Learning the names of our feelings and showing them in our art is a great way to grow.
Second grade recently learned about story telling. We can tell stories with our voice, with our artwork and with written words. Each student created a "Portrait of a Critter" story. Many of them are hung in the hallway. On another day we drew with music like the artist Vassily Kandinsky We used pencil and then oil pastel to draw our thoughts with jazz music. Oil pastels are blends and slightly messy.
Third Grade used line and open shapes to create a “Portrait of a Creature”. They invented their own creature from all CURVING lines who live in a STRAIGHT lined world. It was tricky and fun! Next wee will be making our own interpretation of Blue Dog. Blue Dog is a character painted many many times by Louisiana artist George Rodrigue. We learned about mixing tints and shades with oil pastel. Oil Pastel is blends and slightly messy. Mrs. Collins made up a word for mixing with oil pastels- SMOOOOOSH.
Fourth grade have also been working with lines and portraits. We borrowed a concept from math, parallel lines, to create crazy hair portraits. Keeping the lines organized but wild was a challenge! We are ust finishing a non-objective painting in the style of Sonia Delaunay. Each student mixed tints and shades within a circle and line filled composition.
Fifth Grade recently illustrated their choice of 3 principles of art with BUGS! Bugs showing unity. Bugs showing contrast, Bugs showing variety and more. It was and enjoyable way to teach tricky concepts. Currently we are finishing our own interpretation of a rose window. Normally rose windows are made of stained glass and found in museums or churches. Each student mixed tints and shades to simulate the stained glass. We added out stone tracery with repeating sharpie lines and shapes.
I will be saving the artwork from grades 1-5. We will be creating portfolios to hold our work. Throughout the year we will add to them. At the end of the school year, each child will bring home a large folder of their work. If you would like to see your student's collection of artwork, make an appointment during parent conferences in November or at anytime after November 8.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bev Collins
Art Teacher Prairie Point and Boulder Hill Elementary Schools.

Please provide your child with a pair of gym shoes at school. It is difficult to remember which day P.E. is due to the A, B, C schedule. Also, please help your child learn to tie shoes, it will save a lot of time in P.E.
