Belridge Secondary ESC News
November 2022
From the Principals Desk
The end of the school year is rapidly approaching and what a year it has been. The final term is always jam packed full of activities and excursions and this year is definitely finishing on a high note! As teachers finalise their assessments and end of year reports, it is a time to reflect on the many achievements that our students have made through the educational environment that the teachers and staff have created to enable individual student success. Thank you to all staff! There are a vast number of activities planned that our students will be participating in to celebrate their individual achievements as well as putting into practice the skills and knowledge they have learnt this year. Please keep an eye out for notes and consent forms in your child’s diary.
Year 12 Graduation
Our Year 12 students recently had their Graduation Ceremony at Kingsway Christian College together with their Secondary College peers. On behalf of all the staff here at Belridge we wish to extend our congratulations and express how proud we are of all of your achievements. We wish you all the very best for your future aspirations and thank you all for your contributions to our school.

Well done to each and every one of you! As our senior students do not participate in the WACE examinations, our Year 11 and Year 12 program continues as normal for the remainder of the school year with many exciting educational and community based activities planned.
2023 Planning
Planning for the 2023 school year is well underway and our enrolments will continue to increase however, we are at capacity in terms of overall student numbers for 2023. Our Year 6 transition days have been very much enjoyed by students and we have really appreciated Mrs Hutching’s organisation of these days which has enabled us to get to know our future Year 7’s.

ESNN Lego League Robotics Competition 2022
competition are Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork and Fun. The students learnt how to share ideas and work together to complete a build combining Lego and robotics. Following specific criteria, the students decided on an idea and Boom Nation was born.
We joined several other schools at the Lego League Competition. We transported our build and reprogrammed the robotics. All students had the opportunity to answer the judges' questions and check out the other schools' builds and ideas.
We were fortunate to receive the Explore Award for the most environmental build.
Well done to all the students who were a part of our inaugural team. We are all looking forward to next year.

We have also created some Halloween art, making scary Jack O' lantern pumpkins, spiders and haunted houses. We have continued with our art and craft activities to ensure we have some amazing items to sell on Market Day on 24th November, we hope to see you all there.
Shopping at Coles, has enabled us to continue practicing our road safety skills, the boys have been learning about 'Stop, look, listen, look again'. They are also being helpful in the supermarket, picking the items needed from our shopping list, placing them in the trolley and then scanning them at the self-serve checkouts.

Getting into the term with an enthusiastic start by participating in a sport clinic at ECU and attending the WASO orchestra incursion was such a special experience.
This wonderful start has given our students a great opportunity for social interactions, physical activities and having loads of fun!
7-2 students have also been busy working hard to accomplish their IEP goals in all learning areas. In addition to their individual goals in English and Maths, our class has also been exploring renewable and non-renewable natural resources in HASS and experimenting with different types of forces in Science.
Our class is looking forward to the school's Market Day, we have been busy making and preparing various items for our class stall and can't wait to see you all there!!

We had our Ancient Roman Banquet during Week Two of this term. It was an exciting way to learn about the social aspects of life in ancient times. Our students researched foods, dining customs and attire common to the Ancient Roman era and we planned our banquet according to this research.
We all dressed up in togas and other Roman type attire and lounged on cushions around the food tables. The menu items included chicken, cheese, black olives, salad, port sausages, boiled eggs, bread dipped in olive oil, grape and black currant juice and honey cakes made using an Ancient Roman recipe. As we dined the students listened to music composed during Ancient Roman times. Every student also made a toast, lifting their chalice, based on those typically made in ancient times.
Photos of our celebration can be seen below.
We are studying the physics topic 'Force in Science'. Students have been using toy cars to learn about the push/pull that is force and the different types of force. So far, we have looked at movement, speed, friction and springs. We are having a lot of fun along this learning journey.
Market Day is only a week away and we are busily finishing up our items for sale and looking forward to our Year 7's first Belridge SESC Market Day. Everyone is working towards making our stall a success. We look forward to seeing you all there!

We were fortunate to be part of the WA Symphony Orchestra incursion where we listened to various string instruments, watched how they matched music to a story and heard some of our favourite movie songs such as 'Let it Go'.
Every week we enjoy bike riding and many of the students are trying different types of bikes for the first time. Throughout the year we have regularly participated in morning fitness, this term we are learning skills that could be used on the new exercise course when it is completed. These skills are teaching us how to be safe and will earn us our ninja licences.
Cooking continues to be a favourite subject and this term we have already made pizza, cake in a cup and are now working on a special Market Day treat. During these sessions we begin by listening to instructions, collecting our ingredients and following a plan to cut and cook our food. The best part is eating at the end!

Students followed a social story to complete the task and create their mosaic poppies - as shown in the photos below.
All term, the students have been demonstrating safe, responsible and respectful behaviours and continued to work hard on all given tasks. We have been learning about fractions and telling the time in Maths, working on our comprehension skills in English, our body's early warning signs and puberty in Health, Medieval Europe and Market Day craft in HASS, coding Ozobots in Digital Technologies and playing soccer and riding bikes in PE.

In class we celebrated Halloween. We trick or treated our classroom teachers and received some Halloween themed stationary and (plastic) vampire teeth. It was fun trying to share our news while wearing them.

The warmer weather has been a welcome change in our Work Skills sessions at Landsdale Farm. The students have been developing their skills in maintaining the grounds at the farm by beautifying the areas that are covered in debris and supporting the farm staff with other adhoc jobs. We have been practicing our Key Word Signing and learning the signs for the different animals we see at the farm. The students have enjoyed visiting the animals, particularly watching the pigs roll in the mud to cool themselves off!
There has also been quite a significant change in the flow of activities at High Flyers with all students now engaging other pieces of equipment such as the balance beam, bars and rings as well as trying different body positions while on the trampoline. It has been such a pleasure to see their engagement with the program and their willingness to try new activities.
The work in the classroom continues with students working hard to achieve their IEP goals in
English, Maths and Health and Physical Education as well as Science and Bikes on Wednesdays with Mrs Semmens. Well done to all of our students on their hard work to this point. We are looking forward to seeing what the remainder of the year has to offer and closing the year out strong!

Did the students mention we had some class pets? We have been homing and caring for a number of silk worms and learning about their life cycle. Students took it in turns to feed them with mulberry leaves and are now enjoying watching them cocoon.
A special mention to the lovely DFES team who planned the orienteering trip out to the Swan Valley. Everyone worked so well as a team and had a great time map reading to find the special landmarks and letter codes.
Together as a class we have just finished reading the book "The Witches" by Roald Dahl which has been fun. Everyone has been busy working on their paper bag projects ready to present to the rest of the class. They have done an amazing job of these and I am extremely proud of their efforts.
In the ILC, the focus this term has been on making a healthy breakfast with eggs. In class, students are very excited for their Workplace Learning to start in Week 6 and are looking forward to Market Day coming up soon.
Well done to all the staff and students for a wonderful start to Term 4. Keep it up!

Here is reporter Chrystal to give more information:
"On Friday the 21st of October we had the orchestra come and talk to us about a story called Wombat Stew. It was very noisy, interesting and exciting all at the same time".
The 10-2 class has also ventured into the world of commerce this term. In Week 2 these wonderful students started their Structured Work Experience. The students transformed themselves from the hardworking mature young adults we know in school into hard working mature young adults at work.
Let's hear from the students perspective:
Liv - "This term I started work experience at Beldon Library. It has been both hard and easy at the same time. My favourite thing about work experience is helping the kindy kids put their books in their bags. I have learnt new skills, how to stay on task, and focus on doing the task".
Our topic this term in Science is Chemistry. Through our scientific endeavours, human ingenuity and harnessing the power of chemical reactions we have made eggs bouncy, Coke transparent and made water rainbows using candy. What startling feats will 10-2 accomplish next?
Now we hear from an anonymous reporter with a startling expose on the recent DFES excursion.
"10-2 did a mapping excursion at Swan Valley. We had to find locations registered on the map. The class worked in groups where someone would read the map, and someone would write. The map reading was difficult, but we got through it".
Thankyou as always to the delightful students and team of 10-2 for making this such a great term and this newsletter so easy to write. Keep up the great work 10-2.

Year 11 River Cruise
Everyone had a great time either dancing the night away, singing to their favourite songs or watching the city scape pass by.
11-1
The Beyond School parent night was most informative held the same night as the Year 11 River Cruise. Everyone had a great time at the River Cruise, the students were super excited and danced the night away with their peers. Well done to Jessica who won the Best Dressed Award.
It was a beautiful day for orienteering at Kings Park with all the Year 11 classes and the DFES crew. The students are looking forward to the last few DFES excursions this year which will be catapult building at the Swan Valley Adventure Centre and the Mullaloo Beach clean up later this term.
The students are also busy preparing their Christmas and recycled craft for Market Day as well as finishing off their ASDAN Workright files ready for moderation next year. Students who have completed their ASDAN Towards Independence modules of Meal Preparation and Cooking, Horticulture and Relationships files have been moderated with certificates to be issued towards the end of this year.

11-2 students continue to demonstrate excelled teamwork, kindness and compassion. They continue to support each other in class, social and practical tasks.
The students have been to Kings Park and the Year 11 River Cruise. Students went on the Crystal Swan and had a blast dancing, singing, eating or just watching the water go past. 11-2 students were exceptional in behaviour and great ambassadors for the school.
During DFES we went to Kings Park where students used their navigational skills to find hidden markers around the Park. Students were equipped with a map, compass and a clipboard to record their achievements. Students displayed leadership skills, determination and team work to achieve their goal.
In class 11-2 students have been finishing off all their ASDAN work for the year. They have also been playing sport with other Year 11's every Monday. With Market Day around the corner, our class has also begun working on their stall items; soaps, bath-bombs, candles and more! We look forward to seeing you there.
I look forward to another great term with the 11-2 stars.
Sharon Mandoreba and the 11-2 team.

The Beyond School Parent Night was a huge success and it was great to see so many providers there on the night and so many families gathering useful information to assist their child for the future.
We had two very informative incursions in Week 3 and 4. Happiness Co. talked to us about resilience and knowing 'I am enough!' and the RSPCA shared what they do and gratefully accepted the schools donations of towels, blankets and dog beds.
We were lucky enough to have a lovely warm day for our DFES excursion to Neil Hawkins Park. Students were able to practise their bike skills around the lake and use walkie talkies to communicate with each other. A yummy BBQ lunch was had by all.
Happy 18th Birthday to Jonathan for the 1st November and Farewell to Shaneece who is leaving us and will start work at Clarkson Library with Rocky Bay. We wish her all the best for the future.

12-2 have now completed their second ASDAN Short Course – Citizenship, and they will receive their certificates for this as well as their ASDAN PSHE Short Course towards the end of the year. In class we are currently completing the Keys4Life course, and we will start on resume’s, job applications and interview skills next week.
To complement the Keys4Life Course, we had Brayden Ainsworth from Happiness Co talk to 12-1 & 12-2 in Week 3. Brayden is an ex West Coast Eagles player and had some realistic advice for the students to cope with peer pressure and self-esteem.
We will complete the term with bike riding, canoeing and commando course excursions followed by Market Day and our very special Graduation Morning Tea & Assembly on 1 December. The thought of finally leaving school is starting to be reality for the 12-2 students, however sharing their last days with their amazing peers still leaves their focus on happiness, fun and friendship. The staff are starting to get teary though, as we know how much we will miss this exceptional group!!!
