News and Notes
During the month of December, the kids will be working with the basketballs. As with previous “games” units, grades 3 and 4 will focus on individual skills and partner activities. Grades 5 and 6 will begin each lesson with individual skills and will progress to small group and team situations.
When introducing basketball, I like to speak of how Dr. Naismith created the game based on a childhood activity he and his friends would play “Duck on a Rock”. As a youth, Naismith would throw stones at ducks sitting on rocks. At first it was unclear as to how being mean to ducks could lead to a sport. The more I thought about it however, it became clear that in the late 1800’s there are no sports in which a player is throwing a ball at an object. In this case, it was a soccer ball at a peach basket.
