The Weekly Word from CDS FP - November 12-November 16, 2018
Looking Back
Hello,
Another fine week of school for our curious FP learners!
The winter season has begun. As such, please know that students wearing additional clothing is encouraged. Students are permitted to wear personal jackets outdoors and during lunchtime, so please feel free to dress appropriately.
In the mornings, before school starts, we play outdoors for a few minutes - from the time parents drop off their children until the bell rings at 8am. If it is 5 degrees Celsius or warmer, then we play outdoors. If it is colder than that, students are often ushered into the building, into their respective classrooms.
Things are different though at morning recess and lunch recess. During this time, students are almost always playing outdoors, unless there is inclement or severe weather: rain, extreme cold, extreme wind, etc. Occasionally just PK and K will remain indoors.
What does this mean for the parent? Please send children to school properly dressed. The phrase, "There is no bad weather, only unsuitable clothing" applies here. We want students to love the outdoors, to understand how to remain healthy and safe outside, and to do this, we need parent support in the way of dressing students accordingly: mittens, gloves, multiple layers, boots, hats, jackets with hoods, etc. - all of these are great. Sometimes there is a big snowfall, it is very cold, but every student is incredibly excited to go out and play in the snow, despite the cold. In that case, only students who are dressed safely will be allowed out. Thank you for your support with this, and if you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.
Ms. Kang, our PreK teacher, is going to be a mom! This exciting news is also sad news, as she will be moving on from CDS. Her final day will be November 22. For many years, Ms. Kang has been a fantastic educator at CDS as both a PreK and ELL teacher. She has nothing but praise and best wishes from us in the First Program in her future pursuits. Congratulations, Ms. Kang!
Ms. Lee will be our new PreK teacher. We are happy to have her join the FP community. She begins next week with us, and there will be a one week period where Ms. Lee will be transitioning into her role with the guidance of Ms. Kang and the FP team. Please introduce yourself to her when you get the chance and join us in welcoming her to our community.
There seems to be a high number of unsupervised students on campus - mainly the playground - after school. It often continues into the evening as late as 6pm. That is something we wish to improve with support from the parents. Simply, after school (or after ASP), students are to be supervised by parents as they are leaving campus. While it is positive that students are playing with friends, getting exercise, communicating, this cannot continue in its current form due to the risk that it creates. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Teachers from all three divisions - FP MS HS - will attend a day of professional development sessions at the 2018 KORCOS event. This happens all day on November 17th. We hope for it to be a valuable day for our adult learners.
Reminder to all that next week is a short school week. On Thursday, the students will be dismissed at 1:05, and the buses depart at 1:15. Friday is a non-school day. And for Americans out there, Happy Thanksgiving!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program
FP Winter Concert
Hello! The Dalton School FP winter concert is fast approaching. It will be held in Dalton Hall on Thursday, December 6 at 2:00 pm. The students will be presenting songs and instrumental pieces that they have learned in class (including their own compositions and improvisation pieces) and will also be leading a selection of holiday songs to conclude the performance.
Please ensure that your students are wearing their Dalton formal attire on the day of the concert:
Dalton polos
Long pants (khakis preferable)
Black shoes
To celebrate the season, students may also wear a red or green accessory (such as a scarf, hat or headband).
Please join us to celebrate the end of a successful term and the accomplishments of your children!
Sincerely,
Jon Fejes

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring ELL and Grade 3. Thank you, Ms. Kim and Ms. Minot!
ELL WITH MS.KIM
In term 2, second graders have been learning about “nonfiction writing.” So far, they chose their topics to write about and also learned some strategies to write their introduction. This week, students had an opportunity to learn how to search books on our school’s library website with Ms. Choo. After they read some of their books, they had time to share what new or interesting facts they found in their books to their friends.
GRADE 3 WITH MS. MINOT
We have been adapting fairy tales in 3rd grade. Students read the original fairy tale and are now writing a different version of the story by changing characters, settings, and motivations. This week we specifically worked on the narration at the beginning of the story and adding refrain to their story.
