Erickson Express

Family Newsletter

September 2, 2021

Dear Erickson Families,

Welcome to our newest EAGLES in preschool and kindergarten! They have done a great job this week learning about school and their new friends.

Thank you bus riders for your patience this week as the bus drivers are learning their routes as well as students' names & faces.

This year Erickson is focusing on the word SOAR and creating opportunities for students to soar academically, socially, and emotionally. During weekly classroom meetings, teachers will spend time discussing the following components: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision-Making, Relationship Skills, & Social Awareness. Students will also participate in a daily mindfulness activity. Mindfulness is all about focusing our awareness on the present moment, and acknowledging & accepting our feelings, thoughts, and emotions.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or feedback. The best way to reach me would be via email or phone: or 630-529-2223.

Stacy Johnston

Virtual Curriculum Night: Thursday, September 16 - 6:00-7:30

Last year we had positive parent feedback regarding the LIVE virtual format of Curriculum Night. This year we will continue teacher led curriculum presentations via Google Meet where parents can join their child's teacher on a LIVE Google Meet as he/she reviews the class curriculum and expectations.

The LIVE Virtual Curriculum Night will be on Thursday, September 16th. There are two sessions for each teacher: 6:00-6:40 & 6:50-7:30. Each session is the same, just repeated for parents who have multiple children in the school.

Fine Arts teachers will share a recorded curriculum presentation and also have an OPEN HOUSE LIVE Google Meet from 4:30-6:00 where parents can "drop in" to virtually to talk with the gym, art, music and library teachers.

The LIVE Meet links will be shared with parents closer to the date.

5th Grade Band Information

All 5th grade students met in the gym earlier this week for a demonstration of the band instruments by Mrs. Metzger, the Band Director. Students in 5th grade can join Band and will receive weekly lessons on Mondays.

Mrs. Metzger will be back at Erickson on September 7th to allow students who are interested in playing an instrument see and play the instruments. Students will wear gloves to touch the instruments and all mouthpieces will be disinfectant before use. Playing an instrument is optional, so this is not a mandatory activity.

In addition, there will be an Open House on Monday 9/13 at Erickson from 4:30 to 7:00 pm to provide information regarding the band program. Representatives from Quinlan and Fabish Music will be here to explain the rental program and to allow you an opportunity to rent your student’s instrument.

If you have any questions regarding the 5th Grade Band Program, please reach out to Sue Metzger, Band Director:

Go Orange - Support Hunger Awareness - Canned Food Drive

During the week of September 13-17, Erickson will support hunger awareness and collect canned food items to support the Bloomingdale Food Pantry and the Northern Illinois Food bank. This is in partnership with the Character Counts Bloomingdale Coalition. Students can bring in canned food items to donate throughout the week and place in the marked boxes in the lobby.

Big picture

Communication: Sex Ed K-5 8/2021

On August 20, 2021, Governor Pritzker signed two bills which will add new standards on “personal health and safety education Kindergarten through 5th grade, as well as, make the 6th through 12th grade sexual health education more inclusive.”

While the law takes effect immediately, ISBE has not yet developed these standards; they have a deadline to do so by August 1, 2022. That being said, the Board of Education has not adopted a curriculum and parents/guardians will have the ability to opt out of this instruction. As information becomes available, parents/guardians will be updated.
