Pedestrian Safety
As you may know, vehicle crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists are on the rise in our community, and heavy traffic during arrival and dismissal times can make our school sites more susceptible to accidents. Please remember when driving to school or dropping off your student, to be patient and slowdown in school zones as traffic can stop quickly.
Please do not double park or block crosswalks as it can be dangerous for students attempting to cross or even make it impossible for drivers to see small children. Make sure your student exits and enters the car on the right side, directly onto or off the sidewalk. Together, we can all be Street Smart and take precautions to keep students and families safe when traveling by car, bike, or foot, especially around school zones.
In an effort to keep our students safe, our district is providing pedestrian safety lessons to all Pre-K through 12th grade teachers to implement by June 2023. Please discuss with your child what they are learning about pedestrian safety and the importance of crosswalk safety.

Parent Square Registration
Rowell is piloting a new school communication tool called ParentSquare!
ParentSquare is a safe and secure platform for all district and school-to-home communication, and we couldn’t be more excited to be the first to try it out. Email invitations have now gone out to all families and staff. Flyers have been sent home for families to scan a QR code for registration. Please be sure to register so that you can receive all school communications via email, phone message, and text.
The first step is to ensure that your contact information is up to date in ATLAS and ensure it is consistent for your students, especially if you have more than one student in Fresno Unified. ParentSquare syncs nightly with ATLAS, so any changes or updates will appear in ParentSquare after the nightly sync.
Please visit www.ParentSquare.com and register. Assuming your ATLAS information is all up to date and consistent, your account will be automatically linked with your student(s). You may visit fresnounified.org/parentsquare to access easy training available in both English and Spanish.
SBAC Testing
Smarter Balanced Assessment System
The Smarter Balanced Assessment System utilizes computer-based tests and performance tasks that allow students to show what they know and are able to do. It is based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics and has three components designed to support teaching and learning throughout the year: the summative assessments, the interim assessments, and the Tools for Teachers formative assessment resources.
Breakfast Arrival Procedures for TK-6th Grade
Our campus opens daily at 7:30 A.M. Please do not drop your child off before 7:30 a.m. Breakfast is served from 7:30 – 7:50 a.m. in our cafeteria. Breakfast service ends at 7:50 a.m. All students who arrive between 7:30 – 7:45 a.m. will enter the cafeteria since there is no adult supervision outside of the cafeteria until 7:45 a.m.
PreK parents and guardians are required to accompany their child during breakfast and then walk their student through the PreK, TK, and Kindergarten gate before 8:00 a.m. to sign in with their teacher.
ALL gates will be locked at 8:00 a.m. with the exception of the main walk-in gate on McKenzie Avenue. The PreK, TK, and Kindergarten gate will also lock at 8:00 a.m. daily. All students PreK-6th Grade are expected to be in their classrooms by the 8:00 a.m. Instructional Bell.

Morning Arrival Procedures 1st-6th Grade

Dismissal Gate Procedures 1st-6th Grade
After reviewing our first week dismissal procedures, our Climate and Culture team has decided to add an additional exit gate to reduce congestion at our main gate. Beginning Monday, August 22, 4th through 6th grade students will exit out of the 4th Street pedestrian gate and 1st through 3rd grade students will exit out of our Main School Gate located on McKenzie Avenue. Please discuss and develop a meeting place with your child for pick-up at dismissal. We continue to ask for your patience during dismissal as traffic is usually heavy for 10-15 minutes. Parents are not allowed to double park in the middle of the street nor abandon their running car to pick up their child since this causes traffic to back up on McKenzie.
Please follow all safety procedures to support our crossing guards. For the safety of our Rowell community, we ask that you keep traffic moving and that you circle around our school neighborhood until traffic thins out in this area. Our District Safety Office and the Fresno Police Motorcycle officers often patrol our dismissal gates to support traffic flow in the afternoon. Thank you for your support in keeping our Rowell community safe for everyone!
