Visitors Welcome Back On Campus
Welcome Mrs. Carpenter
Hi EPE Bobcat families!
My name is Debbie Carpenter or Mrs. Carpenter, and I am so happy to be the new media specialist at Eden Park Elementary. Before coming to EPE, I was a teacher in Collier County for over 21 years. I love books and I love to read! So, it is my honor to nurture the love of reading in your children.
In my spare time, you will find me spending it with family as much as I can. We chat around the kitchen or watch movies when my teenage boys decide to hang out with my husband and me.đ In addition, I try to get to the beach once or twice a month if the weather is warm. Mornings at the beach are my favorite, before it gets too hot, when the water is calm, clear, and you can see fish swimming around. Right now, I am rereading Ramona Quimby, Age 8, by Beverly Clearly. She was one of my favorite authors as a child. I try to read some of the chapter book each day during my lunch.
This is my second week at Eden Park Elementary, and I feel like the luckiest media specialist in the district. I look forward to meeting you, working with you, and reading with you!
Warmly,
Mrs. Carpenter
P.S. Follow me at my twitter handle: Mrs. Carpenter @MrsDCarpenter. If you tweet a pic of your student reading, use #Bobcatslovebooks.

Safety Corner from Deputy Woods
In this weekâs safety corner, I want to discuss proper car seat and seat belt utilization. As you know there are so many car seats out there to purchase and at times it can be confusing as to which one is needed during the stages of your child development.
First things first, never buy a used car seat. Car seat are designed to absorb the forces of a crash and if involved in a crash, the car seat may be weakened or faulty. Car seats are also often manufactured and then recalled so make sure when buying a car seat you register it using the registration form on the seat. If the seat is recalled then they will contact you, most times via email.
Ok, so letâs break down the different kinds of car seats. There are several brands out there to purchase and whatever brand you chose is your decision. I will not be endorsing any specific brand in this article. First as your new baby arrives you will need to purchase a Rear-Facing car seat. Why is the baby placed rear facing and why is that important? Let me explain; A rear-facing car seat will absorb most of the crash forces and supports the head, neck and spine. When children ride forward-facing, their heads - which for toddlers are disproportionately large and heavy - are thrown forward, possibly resulting in spine and head injuries. Use a rear-facing car seat from birth until age 2â4.
- Infants and toddlers should be buckled in a rear-facing car seat with a harness, in the back seat, until they reach the maximum weight or height limit of their car seat. This offers the best possible protection.
- Check the car seat manual and labels on the car seat for weight and height limits.
- Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat. Front passenger air bags can injure or kill young children in a crash.
After outgrowing the rear-facing car seat, use a forward-facing car seat until at least age 5.
- When children outgrow their rear-facing car seats, they should be buckled in a forward-facing car seat with a harness, in the back seat. They should stay in the forward-facing car seat until they reach the maximum weight or height limit of this seat.
- Check the car seat manual and labels on the car seat for weight and height limits.
After outgrowing the forward-facing car seat, use a booster seat until the seat belt fits properly.
- When children outgrow their forward-facing car seat, they should be buckled in a belt-positioning booster seat with a seat belt, in the back seat, until the seat belt fits properly without a booster seat. A seat belt fits properly when the lap belt is across the upper thighs (not the stomach) and the shoulder belt is across the center of the shoulder and chest (not on the neck/face or off the shoulder). This typically does not occur until children are age 9â12.
When the seat belt fits properly without a booster seat, use a seat belt on every trip.
- Children no longer need to use a booster seat when the seat belt fits them properly. A seat belt fits properly when the lap belt is across the upper thighs (not the stomach) and the shoulder belt is across the center of the shoulder and chest (not on the neck/face or off the shoulder).
- Proper seat belt fit typically does not occur until children are age 9â12. Seat belt fit can vary by vehicle so check fit in all vehicles to make sure the child no longer needs to use a booster seat. It could be that a child might need a booster seat in one vehicle but not another.
- Keep children properly buckled in the back seat through age 12 for the best possible protection.
I hope this helps with some confusion when shopping for the proper car seat. As always please contact me if you have any questions. Thank You!

Living with Leader In Me
Habit 6: Synergize
Synergize is when two or more people work together to create a better solution that either would have thought of alone. Itâs not your way or my way, but a better way. Talk about the equation: 1 + 1 = 3 (or more). How is that possible? 1 person + another person = 2 ideas + many more than either of them would have thought of alone. Synergy is taking good ideas and making them better by working together. Discussions can focus on other examples of synergy in nature, history, literature, and personal experiences. For example, synergy happens in nature when a flock of geese heads south for the winter. They fly in a V formation because due to the updraft, the entire flock can fly farther than if each bird flew alone.
Synergizing at Home:
Stronger Together
Materials: About 20 popsicle sticks, or other type of stick that is easily broken on its own.
Give each family member a popsicle stick. Ask them to each try to break their stick. Was it easy? Now give someone several popsicle sticks and ask them to try to break them all. Chances are they wonât be able to break the bundle. Ask why that is the case and have a discussion about how the family united together is stronger than one person alone.
Institute a â15-minute programâ where everyone drops what they are doing and pitches in to work as a team to clean the kitchen, pull weeds in the garden, wash the dishes, sweep the front porch, etc. Cutting out a small block of time where everyone helps makes the work go quicker.
If your child has siblings, ask each to identify what they think their brother or sister is really good at, then share the lists with each other and discuss how they could Synergize on homework, chores, playing games, sports, etc.
If your child does not have siblings, you can do the same exercise using his or her best friendsâor you.
