Chemistry-8.P.1- Understnad the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container
Physical Properties
- Can be observed or measured without changing it
- odor, mass, density, volume, color and state
- A characteristics that you can observe without changing the composition of the substance
- Describes how something looks, smells, feels, sounds or tastes
Chemical Properties
- Describes matter based on its ability to change into new matter with different properties
- Flammability, reactivity, oxidation and toxicity
- These properties can only be observed during a chemical reaction
- A characteristic that you can only observe by changing the identify of the substance
- Describes how something reacts with something else
Physical Change
- Does not form a new substance
- any change that does not involve a change in the substances chemical identity
- Can be reversed
- Ex: Rocking chair, Wood Chipper, Ice cube
Chemical Change
- one or more substances are changed into new substances that have new and different properties
- chemical change cannot be reversed
- any change in matter that results In the formation of new chemical substance
- Ex: Frying an egg, Burning wood, cooking, eating
Elements, Compounds and Mixtures
Elements: Building Blocks of matter made of atoms
- Each one has its own symbol
- contains one type of atom
- Ex: Carbon(C), Gold(Au), Nitrogen(N), Mercury(Hg)
Compounds: Substance formed when two or more elements chemically combine
- Made of 2 or more elements
- can only be separated chemically not physically
- Ex: H2O, C6H12O2, NacL
Mixture: Combination of two or more different substances that are mixed not combined
Heterogenous
