Virtual Due to COVID- Update on Attendance at UTSC

Through the Indiana Department of Education, when students are out of school for the day, regardless of the reason, each school is required to notify the state as to 'why' a child is absent for the day.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, the IDOE has added additional designations for 'why' students are out.

If a child is not feeling well or has been in close contact with someone who has been exposed to COVID-19, we designate them as 'Virtual Due to COVID' through the IDOE. What this means is that the child has been sent home by the school.

If your child is virtual or as a parent you elect your child to be virtual, you are simply marked as 'Virtual', and your child's attendance is based on whether they attend their virtual classes.

As a school, if a parent or family is choosing to keep their child(ren) out for precautionary reasons, we have to move those students to 'Virtual': According to the UTSC Re-Entry Plan, parents are using their one option for the school year, and if a voluntary change in placement is made again by the parent, than that is where their child will finish the school year.

The reason for this is two fold:

1) Schools are required by the IDOE to designate the 'why' a child wasn't in school

2) The flip-flopping of virtual and in-person students

A lot of this information is 'inside baseball' for school procedures, so if you have any questions about how this process works, please feel free to give Mr. Fuller a call :)

Principal Fuller's Thoughts

How do we take the first right step?

Have you ever found yourself pondering so hard about a decision that you've waited too long and nothing has been accomplished?

A small tree had fallen in our backyard back in late September, and for a month, I contemplated and contemplated about how I wanted to attack the job.

I would have my coffee on the back deck overlooking the woods, and just think about how I wanted to remove the tree.

Each weekend something would pop up, and the dead tree just laid there: The tree became my frog (I'll explain in a minute).

It wasn't until this past weekend that my father came to visit Baby Benjamin, and we tackled the job together: About 30 minutes of my weekend was all it took to complete a job that lasted almost 5 weeks.

Have you ever heard of the expression 'Eat Your Frogs'?

It's in reference to a task that you let linger because it isn't something you want to do or that you know will be extremely difficult.

Every morning we are faced with frogs...frogs at home, frogs at work, frogs with our personal lives...FROGS EVERYWHERE!

When parents are allowed to venture back into my office, you will notice a green frog that hangs right next to my doorway. It is a reminder to eat my frogs every day, whatever those frogs may be.

All too often we build up things in our head that seem too challenging or just unappealing, and what do we do...we procrastinate!

Instead of wasting hours, days, or YEARS on trying to figure out the perfect move or waiting to start a task you have been putting off forever....JUST DO IT!

Get out of your own head and take action!

You don't have to know exactly the outcome or where the journey will take you, but you will never accomplish anything if you don't start by taking that first step.

If you do plan to eat your frogs, remember these two rules:

1) If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first.

2) If you have to eat a live frog, it doesn't pay to look at it very long.

Take action. Develop a positive appetitive for frogs. And remember, there are no shortcuts to eating frogs.

Bon appétit :)
