From the Principal's Desk
It's been an amazing start to our school year. For educators who said goodbye to friends of many years as they left for the primary building and saying hello to new friends as 5th grade joined us, this group of staff has bonded just like close friends...or family. Our theme of "Family Makes Our House a Home" has truly played out during the last several months. We hope all of our students feel this closeness. Connection is highly important for success. Educational researcher John Hattie lists teacher-student relationships as having a huge impact on student success. Most educators know that creating meaningful connections with students can set the stage for a great year for students. It gives them a sense of safety and belonging...both of which allows for the executive functions of the brain to work correctly. At PES, we strive to forge bonds with our students that show them how important they are and give them impetus to strive for their very best. We believe that all PES students are 'OUR" kids. They deserve to feel that way.

Parent Teacher Conferences
This year, we are doing an online sign-up for conferences with your child's teacher. The link to do this was sent home on a note sent home this past week. You may also sign up to see the special area teachers, too.
IMPORTANT: Do not submit another appointment time if you have already done so. If you need to change the time of the conference, contact your child's teacher by email or note, and they will make the change.
Can't wait to see you on Thursday!
Morning Drop-off and Afternoon Pick-up
In the afternoon, we use the Safe Dismissal System that requires us to input your car visor code in the order that the students will be dismissed. We start at the outside lane (closest to Schindler Road) and input the car visor numbers for the ENTIRE lane before moving back to the front of lane 2 to input that lane's numbers. Everyone must have a car visor to pick up a child as this tells us that you have been granted permission by the parents to take the child home. If you are having someone outside your family pick up, make sure to get them a copy of the car visor (we can make a copy for you at the office). As you enter the four pick-up lanes, MAKE SURE TO STAY IN THE LANE YOU ENTERED IN. This keeps the numbers in order and students will be waiting at the correct spot when you pull up. Even one car out of order can make the system move slower.
We appreciate your help and support to keep these processes safe and as efficient as possible. If you have questions, feel free to contact us.
Parents - We Want YOU!
Parents involved in their child's education impact the success of the student's achievement. We invite you to connect with the school in meaningful ways. Please communicate with your teacher in ongoing ways. Some teachers use apps like Class Dojo, Bloomz, and Remind. Some may set up a classroom Facebook page. Many of our teachers are on Twitter sharing the wonderful things happening in their classrooms. Others are more traditional and chiefly utilize the child's planner. However they communicate, please let your child know how important their achievement is by connecting.
A great way to find out what is occurring at PES is to attend our PIE (Parents Involved in Education) meetings. We will share some vital aspects of our educational program with you including our Title I instruction for students who need extra support in literacy and our preparation for MAP tests. Please come to these meetings to provide input. We value you and want to hear from you! Dates for our PIE meetings this year are listed:
October 1 @ 6 PM - PES library
January 30 @ 6 PM - Location TBD
April 2 @ 6 PM - Location TBD
Other Ways to Be Involved
While we invite you to come have lunch with your child, we are requesting that you use the PES Family Dining Room just off the cafeteria to enjoy some special time with your child. We thank you for continuing to honor the importance of classroom instruction by setting up times with your child's teacher if you wish to bring in birthday snacks. Some teachers may have a holiday party just before Christmas break that you may be invited to attend. Others choose to have classroom activities that focus on the students only. As previously, we will have a holiday program on December 19 at the Perry Park Center also.
Last, we will be having other opportunities for you to come to school this year, including our Family Fun Nights. On November 19, we will have a Math Family Fun Night. March 2 will be our literacy themed Family Fun Night. We will have days on October 23, 24, and 25 for some special time between grandparents (or special senior friends) and our students. Please put these on your calendar and plan to attend.
We look forward to seeing you! We love to have our families involved.
