Spirit of Youth Award nominations
Kodiak has some amazing teens deserving of this recognition! Spirit of Youth recognition - deadline for nominations extended through Feb 1. Nominations can come from anyone who wishes to recognize a hard-working Alaska teenager. Nominations can be made in one of 8 categories. Recommendations often come from school staff and board members; youth clubs and organizations; the business community or other teenagers. Any community member inspired by a teen’s efforts can submit a nomination. https://www.spiritofyouth.org/categories/
This week Math and ELA teacher's gave student's an IXL assessment. This tool is directly tied to Alaska State Standards. Teachers will be able to identify which standards students have mastered and at what grade-level. Then they will be able to assign practice lessons in IXL specific to a student's needs. The data from this tool will also assist teachers in developing lessons based upon student progress and mastery of standards.
Grizzly Ticket Challenge Update
We have some amazing students here at KMS and we love to recognize them and show our appreciation!! When a middle school faculty or staff member observes a student exhibiting positive characteristics or behaviors, he/she can write that student a Grizzly Ticket. Then, at the end of each week, one of our administrators will draw ONE ticket from each grade, awarded for kindness, citizenship, respect, integrity, or some other positive action or trait. This past week's winner was....AEILA COLMINAS! Awesome job, AEILA!!
These weekly winners (one per grade) receive a small prize, and ALL Grizzly Tickets awarded since the start of the school year will be entered in a big prize drawing in May!
In addition, we are currently in the middle of a Grizzly Ticket Challenge! Each grade is competing as a team to be the first to collectively earn 90 Grizzly Tickets and win a special treat for their entire grade!
As of Friday, January 13, these are the current scores:
6th grade- 40
7th grade- 23
8th grade- 11
Keep it up, 6th graders!! You are doing an amazing job!!!
🐝🐝 2023 KMS SPELLING BEE 🐝🐝
Friday, January 20, the 2023 KMS SPELLING BEE was held after school, in the KMS Commons.
Sixth-grader Malakai Thompson came in first place!
Seventh-grader Lincoln Roberts came in second place!
Sixth-grader Lucas Cook finished as alternate!
Malakai and Lincoln will represent Kodiak Middle School at the district level next month.
Way to go, guys!!! We are so proud of all 23 students who showed up and did their best.
❓❓ LUNCH TIME TRIVIA WINNERS ❓❓
Each Friday, our multi-talented lunch monitor, Ms. Tamie, hosts a trivia contest for each grade level. She prepares and posts questions on the big screen, and students use their iPads to play along during their scheduled lunch times.
Points are awarded not only for correctly answering the questions, but also for speed! The competition can get pretty intense and the students do a great job teaming up to increase their odds of winning. Teams consist of 1-4 members, and winners receive prizes donated by local businesses or individuals.
This week's prize was provided by Subway, and the winning team members were (L to R, below):
Ryan Glade, Justin Thomas, Zachary Marker, and Jackson Dube.
Congratulations, 6th graders!!

This week students chose a country or province in the Western Hemisphere to research. They are putting their research and note-taking skills to use and identifying the human and physical features of that place. Some research skills we are reviewing are: using keywords, clicking on websites rather than just staying on the search page, evaluating websites and checking date/author, citing sources, looking at a variety of websites (3 is the goal!), and not copy/pasting information. At the end of their research students should be able to describe that place in the world using a variety of features. They will use the information they collected in an upcoming project. They also checked their progress on naming Canada’s provinces & territories by taking a quiz.
Students have been working on writing math expressions using some basic algebra. If someone has 7 more dollars than their friend, you can write that they have “7 + x” dollars. We are finishing up our 6th grade algebra unit and we will have a test coming up (exact date to be announced.) Next, we will be working with negative numbers in different situations (elevation, temperature, money, etc.) We have returned to weekly HW for semester 2: HW is assigned at the start of the week and due on Friday. This week’s HW was a review sheet to practice many skills we’ve worked on this year! Have a great weekend!
This week we started growing pipe-cleaner crystals. Everyone got a pipe cleaner to bend into any shape they chose, and they are now soaking in salt water to see if we can get salt crystals to form. Next week we will start talking about plate tectonics.
GT work for students is continuing with the completion of the GT Work Release Form and an idea! If you have any questions, or there is any way I can support your learner, please do not hesitate to reach out at kyle.deuling@kibsd.org.
If you see something that belongs to you call Ms. Kim at 907-486-7459, and she will connect your lost item(s) with your student. :)
Coming in February
